Which fish for my aquaponic system?

You can breed many freshwater fish such as perch, carp, sturgeon, zander or crayfish too. But in warmer climates, or an aquaponic system inside a heated habitat for example, or in heated systems, you can have tilapia, yellow perch, barramundi, black bass and the silver perch.

One thing to take into account is that it's quite complicated to find young fish and you don't always have a choice for variety.

Filtration

For the system to work well, there is a small automatic siphon system to be put in place which automatically engages when the water level has reached its maximum in the culture tray, and then after, it will stop. all alone. The water circulates from the fish tank to the culture tanks, which acts as a filter.

It is also the advantage of creating a small oxygenating current for the fish, and it is sometimes enough for the fish to live well.

The filtration tank, an essential element for water purification and sanitation, contains bacteria that transform fish excrement into nutrients that can be assimilated by plants. The water then falls, cleaned and oxygenated, into the fish tank. The water then remains of very good quality for the fish, which can grow there in complete safety and in very good conditions.

Monitor oxygen supply and don't overcrowd your fish tanks!

The choice of the air pump is a point to be taken seriously. During the day, plants produce oxygen which is beneficial to fish. But at night, they consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide. It is therefore necessary to make an oxygen supply. Do not overcrowd the tanks either, because again, this would be detrimental to the living beings in the tanks and would lead to dramatic mortality rates.

If the water flow of your waterfall is sufficient and the number of fish is reasonable, then the air pump becomes optional. You can, however, monitor your water for its oxygen value and chemical composition.

Chemical control of your water

Why is this important? Again, because you have chosen to include aquatic animals, and of course you want them to be healthy… How do you control your water?

For this purpose, the main thing in an aquaponics system is fish food, such as fish pellets. With aquaponics, the goal is to produce healthy food. Hence the advantage of producing your own food for your own fish or buying good quality food.
