I have a garden pond, unfortunately over the years I find that it gets very dirty and I feel like my filter and my skimmer can't keep up. So I'm thinking of buying a vacuum cleaner but I can't decide. Is it a really essential tool? Here are some tips for choosing the vacuum cleaner that will suit you best :)!
Why use a pond vacuum?
Over the years, silt tends to build up at the bottom of the pond. If left too long, it will turn into rotting mud and a stubborn problem which, in time, will endanger the biological balance of the pond. In general, every 5 to 6 years, we advise our customers to carry out a good cleaning with an emptying of ⅓ of the basin (in volume) to eliminate vases and dead leaves from the bottom.
How it works ?
A pond sludge vacuum pumps the water-laden sludge into a tank, then the tank empties automatically via the drain pipe. Some tanks are emptied gradually, others operate by time delay.
You have to dip the tip of the vacuum cleaner directly into the mud. Then, the device is switched on and then, as with a conventional vacuum cleaner, the bottom of the pond is gently swept so that the mud vacuum cleaner does its job properly.
Concerning the evacuation, we suggest that you reject directly at the foot of your terrestrial plants because the mud constitutes a first quality fertilizer! ;-)
It is also possible to place a small net at the outlet of your vacuum cleaner in order to keep the largest dirt and to reject the water in your pool. However, we do not recommend this method because the smallest particles that make up the mud will once again end up at the bottom of your pool.
Good to know: It is therefore quite normal for the level of your pool to drop slightly when cleaning with your vacuum cleaner. All you have to do is fill it in again afterwards… and that's not a bad thing! A small change of water from time to time is recommended to keep a good balance of the pond.
Once you have finished cleaning, we recommend running a little water over the various parts of your vacuum cleaner (tank, filter, foam, inlet/outlet, etc.).
In this way, your device remains maintained and efficient for many years.
Period of use
We advise you to carry out your pool maintenance work in the fall. A little cleaning at the start of the season, after winter, is also a good idea.
For the rest of the year, watch the bottom of your pond from time to time and ensure that the level of mud is not excessive.
