Is salt important for my fish? What type of salt should I use? How do I treat my fish with pond salt? Pond salt is something that every fish or koi owner should have on hand at all times.
Not only does pond salt help boost your koi's natural defense against disease, it reduces the effect of nitrite toxicity, it also adds beneficial electrolytes to the water. When used in the right dosage, it will kill most common parasites found in a pond. Be careful not to overdo it, though, especially if you have plants.
Why use pond salt?
A salt bath for an aquarium or pond fish helps to stop possible external infections and to reduce the osmotic pressure of your fish. This sudden change in salinity with salt water will cause the cells to burst due to a change in osmotic pressure (osmotic shock).
This method, used mainly for freshwater fish, consists of putting pond water in a container ( quarantine tank for pond fish ), then adding suitable pond or aquarium salt . This type of bath can, for example, eliminate white spots.
Once the salt is well mixed in the water , we advise you to catch the fish without touching them with your hands and immerse them in the salt water.
It is very important to use iodine-free (non-iodized) salt . This salt is an emergency treatment for your fish, koi carp, china sails. It acts on a large part of parasites.
We recommend a short bath at 15G to 30G/L (2 to 3% max) for a good ten minutes with an aerator (diffuser for air pump) immersed in the container. This salt is also very active on mold. Be careful not to use directly in a garden pond.
