The sound of this chime is as extraordinary as an eclipse because it follows the musical phenomenon of octave splitting. What is it? You are probably familiar with the scale C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C; the "C" notes that appear at the beginning and end of the scale are actually the same note, but separated by an octave. Notes that are separated by an octave are considered harmonic equivalents; when played together, they produce a very pleasant sound. In the case of this chime, each note is combined with its double octave, which reinforces the effect of the harmonics.
