Foam quality
Foams used in the presence of live animals in aquariums must absolutely have undergone a test for harmful substances, because most synthetic materials release problematic plasticizers into the water. All plastics used by JBL have undergone this test and do NOT release ANY harmful substances into the water.
Cleaning plastic materials
For many months, it is sufficient to rinse dirty filter foams under lukewarm running water and then inoculate filter bacteria before restarting (JBL FilterStart). However, since mechanical cleaning NEVER completely removes dirt and dirt will remain in the foam, it is recommended to replace the filter foams approximately every 6 months. Leave a filter foam that you have just cleaned overnight in a glass of clean water and the next morning you will be able to tell by the smell how much dirt is still contained in the supposedly clean foam!
Inoculation of cleaning bacteria into filtration equipment
An initial colonisation of the filter material with cleaning bacteria takes around 1 to 2 weeks in fresh water, twice as long in sea water. If the filter material was already in use, the time for a "recolonisation" will be doubled, because this does not occur so easily on a dead bacterial mat. The addition of concentrated cleaning bacteria as in the JBL FilterStart reduces the biological running-in period to around 24 hours. Another reason for this addition is to occupy the colonisation space with these beneficial bacteria so that any pathogens have nowhere to spread. This has now been scientifically proven.
