One of the advantages of the JBL CristalProfi external filters is their internal structure with pre-filters on top which are easily accessible and therefore easy to clean.
The pre-filters have the task of cleaning the coarse dirt sucked into the filter so that it does not clog the following filter material.
But, since in the worst case coarse dirt can quickly clog the pre-filters, JBL has designed this filter basket.
Instead of containing two smaller filter foam plates located on the outside, it now contains a large one-piece pre-filtration plate, the surface area of which is at least double the previous ones.
The pre-filter is therefore not clogged so quickly and the high efficiency of the external filter remains assured.
Cleaning of plastic materials
For many months, it is sufficient to rinse dirty filter foams under lukewarm running water and then inoculate filter bacteria before restarting (JBL FilterStart).
However, as mechanical cleaning NEVER allows total cleaning and dirt will remain in the foam, it is recommended to replace the filter foams approximately every 6 months.
Inoculation of cleaning bacteria into the filtration material
A first colonization of the filtration material by cleaning bacteria lasts approximately 1 to 2 weeks in fresh water, twice as long in sea water.
If the filtration equipment was already in use, the time for a "recolonization" will be multiplied by two, because it is not easily done on a dead bacterial mat.
The addition of concentrated cleaning bacteria as in the JBL FilterStart reduces the biological break-in period to approximately 24 h.
Another reason is to occupy the colonization space with these useful bacteria so that possible pathogenic germs find no place to spread.
This has now been proven scientifically.
