How to create a pretty stream?

Who hasn't dreamed one day of relaxing in the sun while listening to the gentle lapping of a stream in their garden? Build your own stream and turn your dream into reality!
The waterproof cover is the first element to take into consideration, as when fitting out a pool. The waterproofing sheet must offer exceptional reliability and longevity. This also applies to a stream. Placed under the bed of the stream, a felt with an EPDM tarpaulin prevents water loss.

Several possibilities

To make a stream or a waterfall, it is necessary to have a slight slope. If the ground is flat, the earthworks can be carried out by the excavator present for the construction of the house. This obviously requires having an overall vision of your future garden.

In this case, however, we assume that you already have a pond in your garden. The idea is to create a second piece of water, connected to the first pool by a stream and/or a waterfall. It is important to evenly distribute the volume of water between the two basins. The lower basin should always hold more water and occupy a larger area than the higher basin. You can also make a succession of small pools on several levels, linked together by a stream.

To ensure the watertightness of the stream, you can use the falls of the basin tarpaulin. The laying is comparable to that of the tiles of a roof: the tarpaulin of the upper basin must cover that of the lower basin. You can also assemble the membranes by bonding/vulcanization. This will give you a perfect seal.

To make the edges and keep the tarpaulin in place, it is advisable to use Ecolat slats and Ecopics pegs . The technique is identical to that used for the construction of the pond. Do not develop the bed of the creek on a slope but plan a succession of small horizontal bodies of water which always remain filled with water. If the pump stops, aquatic life must not be endangered. This succession of small horizontal basins contributes to the survival of fauna and flora, while guaranteeing a very aesthetic rendering.

Very flexible, an EPDM tarpaulin allows you to perfectly follow all the curves of the stream.

After making the edges and laying the tarp in all the meanders of the stream, you can take care of the work of finish . Let your creativity run wild. A usual practice, but not obligatory, consists in obtaining the most natural result possible, by imitating nature. The tarpaulin, which covers the entire stream, prevents water from escaping from below. If you wish, you can brick the tarpaulin.

But water loss due to splashing should also be avoided. To avoid water splashing out of the creek, make sure the current is concentrated in the middle of the course of the creek. It is possible to put some pebbles or stones in the bed of the stream to divert the flow of water.

Make sure the water does not overflow into the garden. The water that is pushed back towards the highest point must end its course in the lower basin (part of the water evaporates, but this quantity is negligible).
