How to properly arrange the banks of a pond?

The larger your pond, the more careful you will need to be with your landscaping. This will increase its value and greatly enhance its aesthetic appeal. You can spend hours admiring your pond, its fauna and flora. So, to properly arrange the banks of your pool, try to mix the various elements listed below. In this way, you will create a zen, natural environment conducive to meditation.

1. Terrace

Adding a small terrace on the banks of a pond will allow you to enjoy your frogs and its water lilies. But this installation has many advantages. A deck or small dock is a great place to place a bench and fish or relax. In addition, you can also add a ladder from the terrace to facilitate your entry into the water (in the natural pools). You can also attach a boat to the quay or the terrace to go on an excursion whenever you want.

2. Natural waterfall

The basin includes fish, frogs and dragonflies but also plant species. And to keep this ecosystem healthy and limit the proliferation of algae in the spring, nothing better than a pretty natural waterfall.

In order to create your natural waterfall by yourself, form a waterfall path with ceramic paving. Stack them on a bed of gravel to create a slight slope. This will allow the water to flow smoothly into the water in your garden pond.

3. Rocks, pebbles and gravels

Rocks, pebbles and gravel are decorative elements that will adorn the banks of your pool. Place large boulders at the edge of the pond to create natural seats. The medium sized flat rocks placed in the mud at the edge of the pond provide a safe walking area. And if your garden pond is very close to your house, you can also create a stepping stone path for a feng shui touch.

4. Aquatic and Terrestrial Plants

Plant species help create a relaxing atmosphere and decorate the banks of your pond. In addition, they will filter part of the water, which is practical in the event of a natural swimming pool.
But be careful, fish eat plant species. It will therefore be necessary to create a lagoon. This means that you will need to set aside a (usually shallow) part of your pond for your aquatic plants.

Which plants to choose for the banks of a pond?

As is the case with most natural bodies of water, the edges of your pond are prime areas for aquatic and terrestrial plants.

They provide favorable conditions for many moisture-loving species. By choosing the right plants carefully, you can turn your pond into a central and attractive focal point for your garden.

Here are 10 aquatic and terrestrial plants that we recommend:

  • Marsh population;
  • Nummular Lysimachus;
  • iris;
  • Butterbur;
  • Papyrus (unless you have a tarp);
  • Fittonia albivenis;
  • Scarlet Hibiscus;
  • Horsetails;
  • Eupatorium purpureum;
  • Arched bangle.

And in addition to the layout, remember to maintain your pool well!

Carefully arranging the banks of a pond is a good thing. But carrying out regular water changes and taking care of its ecosystem is even better. With this in mind, we invite you to discover our article dedicated to the maintenance of a garden pond.
