How does an aquaponics system work?
The aquaponics system with trout and vegetables in synergy, a way to produce totally natural and ultra-healthy food.
Aquaponics is a project that excites many people because it makes it easier to grow plants. It is therefore a simple system that allows you to grow vegetables or fruits with organic fertilizers produced by the fish.
To succeed, there are a few simple principles that require rigor!
What fish for my aquaponics system?
You can raise many freshwater fish such as perch, carp, sturgeon, pike-perch, or even crayfish. But in warmer climates, or in an indoor aquaponics system in a heated home, for example, or in heated systems, you can have tilapia, yellow perch, barramundi, black bass, and silver perch.
One thing to consider is that it is quite complicated to find young fish and you don’t always have a choice of variety.
Filtration
For the system to work well, there is a small automatic siphon system to set up that automatically engages when the water level reaches its maximum in the growing tank, and then it turns off by itself. The water circulates from the fish tank to the growing tanks, which act as a filter.
It also has the advantage of creating a small oxygenating current for the fish, and sometimes that is enough for the fish to live well.
The filtration tank, an essential element for water purification and sanitation, contains bacteria that transform fish waste into nutrients that can be absorbed by the plants. The water then falls back, cleaned and oxygenated, into the fish tank. The water then remains of very good quality for the fish, which can grow there safely and in very good conditions.
Monitor the oxygen supply and do not overpopulate your fish tanks!
The choice of air pump is a point to take seriously. During the day, plants produce oxygen, which is beneficial to the fish. But at night, they consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Therefore, you need to provide oxygen. Do not overpopulate the tanks either, because once again, it would be detrimental to the living beings in the tanks and would lead to dramatic mortality rates.
If the water flow of your waterfall is sufficient and the number of fish is reasonable, then the air pump becomes optional. However, you can test your water to find out its oxygen level and chemical composition.
Chemical control of your water
Why is this important? Once again, because you chose to include aquatic animals in it, and of course, you want them to be healthy… How to test your water?
You can use a special kit to measure the most important points, pH, KH, ammonia level, nitrates, etc.. here is an inexpensive kit that is highly sought after on foudebassin.com
Fish food
To this end, the main thing in an aquaponics system is fish food, such as fish pellets. With aquaponics, the goal is to produce healthy food. It is therefore out of the question to introduce this kind of ingredients into the system. Most fish sold commercially come from farms whose food contains GMOs. Hence the advantage of producing your own food for your own fish or, alternatively, buying high-quality food.
And let's not even talk about the quality of the vegetables you find commercially, even organic. We must now change our habits and start producing healthy and local food at home.
So, hunting and raising flies, grasshoppers, and ants that trout love are all healthy foods to give your fish. Earthworms too.
Now, not everyone has the necessary space or the desire to get into this kind of farming. So the organic fish pellet solution remains guaranteed
So there are kinds of ideal food for all the herbivorous or omnivorous fish in your pond. Hikari Wheat-Germ, for example, is a natural food based on wheat germ, very digestible, specially developed for cooler waters and temperature changes. Nothing could be simpler to give the ideal daily dose for your fish
Everything is possible. You just have to try. If you also want to try, don't hesitate!
