Install a floating aerator: placement, mooring, and access

A good aerator can be poorly used if it is placed in an inaccessible corner, too close to sediment, or with an insufficient cable. Before launching, take the time to prepare the location and maintenance operations.
Choose a location that serves your objective
Identify the areas to put back into circulation and those that must be preserved. The geometric center of the pond is not necessarily the best location. A cove, strip of vegetation, or narrowing may alter circulation. For several isolated areas, request a suitable installation.
Check the clear water depth beneath the device, sediment, and seasonal changes in the water level. An intake that is too close to the bottom may stir up silt. A device that is not sufficiently clear of obstacles may also quickly accumulate vegetation.
Prepare the mooring before launching
Identify the anchor points and their accessibility. The securing ropes or cables must correspond to the system specified by the manufacturer. They must allow the float to remain properly positioned when the water level changes and the wind picks up.
Do not replace a mooring with a pull on the power cable. Keep the securing methods, connection, and retrieval method separate. A simple plan of these routes helps the people who maintain the site understand the installation.
Check everything that must reach the power supply point
- The voltage and exact device variant.
- The actual length of the cable route.
- The connections authorized by the instructions.
- The protective equipment and control box.
- The movement of users around the banks.
The connection must be suitable for an aquatic environment. Avoid improvised solutions with ground connections exposed to water. Electrical validation is part of the project and is not limited to choosing an outlet.
Organize retrieval and cleaning
Plan for stable access from which to remove the device. Ask about the variant's weight and the handling equipment required. Maintenance must be possible without pulling on connections or walking on an unstable bank.
Note the inspection steps for the grille or basket, fasteners, and accessible parts. The schedule depends on the manual and the amount of vegetation present. After each intervention, check that everything has been repositioned correctly and is operating properly.
Commissioning is checked in the water
Observe the float's stability and the spray. Check the areas of interest, then measure temperature and oxygen at representative points. In a deep old pond, avoid starting it abruptly without a prior assessment of the bottom. Prepare the startup procedure at the same time as the installation.
References to consider for your project
These references are intended for different uses. Consult the current specifications, variants, and manuals before choosing.
Aquitechnics pond emulsifier

Worth considering for a surface-aeration project. The choice of version and placement must take the depths and site constraints into account.
OASE AirFlo aerator

An OASE range to consider for a surface-aeration project. Check the variant, power supply, and installation conditions specified in its manual.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extend the cable freely?
Have the permitted solution for the model and connection confirmed. The cable and its protective measures are part of the installation.
Should the aerator be removed in winter?
It depends on the model. Some devices must be removed before freezing temperatures; check the manual rather than applying a rule common to all aerators.
To continue your project
- Aerating a 5,000 m² to one-hectare pond: preparing a coherent project
- Aerating a shallow pond: choosing when the water is less than one metre deep
- Starting aeration in an old pond: avoid overly vigorous mixing
- Maintaining a pond air pump: filter, membranes, and diffusers
