Create a mini water garden: tub, barrel, or small prefabricated pond - the guide to a successful small water feature
No room for a large pond? An old barrel, a tank, or a small 150-litre preformed pond is enough to create a real water feature. Within a few weeks, the first dragonflies settle, birds come to drink, and a dwarf water lily blooms. A successful mini pond needs a clean, watertight container, a partly shaded location, three or four well-chosen plants, and, most of the time, no fish: small wildlife will settle in by itself. Here’s how.
— The short answer
Choose a container of at least 100 to 150 litres that is watertight and free of toxic residues, or a small preformed pond for burying. Install it in a spot that receives four to six hours of sunlight, preferably in the morning. Fill it with rainwater, plant a dwarf water lily, one or two marginal plants, and an oxygenating plant, all in baskets. Avoid fish in ponds under a few hundred litres. A small pump or natural small wildlife helps limit mosquitoes, and a frost-resistant container can stay outdoors over winter.

Choosing the container
| Container | Key strengths | Things to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Small preformed pond for burying | Plant shelves, frost-resistant, durable | Make sure the bottom is well supported and the sides are level |
| Half-barrel | Highly decorative, perfect for a terrace | Make it watertight with a liner; do not use treated wood |
| Resin or plastic tub | Lightweight, inexpensive, and frost-resistant | Choose a dark shade for a more natural look |
| Glazed terracotta pot or basin | Very attractive | Usually susceptible to frost: empty in winter |
| Metal tub | Retro style | Heats up quickly in the sun; some metals can leach into the water |
Whatever the container, rinse it thoroughly without detergent, and avoid anything that has held chemicals. A minimum volume of 100 to 150 litres makes the water much more stable than a simple bucket.
Where to install it
The small volume is a mini pond's weakness: it heats up quickly in full sun and turns green. The ideal location gets four to six hours of sun, especially in the morning, and remains shaded in the afternoon. Avoid placing it directly under trees, which fill the water with leaves. On a terrace or balcony, check the load: 150 liters of water weighs 150 kg, not counting the container and stones. A pond sunk into the ground keeps water cooler in summer and more stable in winter than a container placed above ground.
Ubbink Iris SI, 150 L in-ground pond
Small preformed pond, 120 x 90 x 40 cm, with shelves, ideal for a first mini pond. Direct price and add to cart:
Plants: few, but well chosen
- A dwarf water lily to cover part of the surface and flower all summer, placed on the bottom in its basket.
- One or two compact marginal plants, on a shelf or a brick: dwarf iris, rush, water mint.
- An immersed oxygenating plant such as hornwort, which competes with algae.
- Possibly a few native floating plants to shade the water.
Plant in baskets or planting bags, using poor aquatic soil, never garden soil. Aim to have about half the surface covered in summer.
Fish in a mini pond?
The honest answer is no, below a few hundred liters. The volume is too small to absorb their waste, the temperature changes too quickly, and winter is risky. In a small preformed pond of 500 liters or more, well planted and shaded, two or three small fish may be considered, with a small filtration system. Koi never belong in a mini pond. Without fish, small wildlife arrives on its own: water striders, backswimmers, dragonfly larvae, and sometimes a frog.

What about mosquitoes?
Standing water can harbor mosquito larvae. Three solutions: a small pump or fountain that agitates the surface, natural predators such as dragonfly larvae and backswimmers, which quickly arrive in a well-planted mini pond, and a partially clear surface so predatory birds and insects can access the water. A balanced mini pond generally produces far fewer mosquitoes than a forgotten flowerpot saucer.
Maintenance and winter
- Top up the water level with rainwater in summer: evaporation is rapid in a small volume.
- Remove the leaves and spent flowers before they sink.
- Prune the plants that take over the entire space.
- In winter, a frost-resistant tub can stay outside; a terracotta pot should be emptied and stored away. A mini pond can freeze almost completely: hardy plants can tolerate it, but fish cannot.

Frequently asked questions
— What is the minimum size for a mini pond?
Approximately 100 to 150 liters for sufficiently stable water. Below that, the temperature and water quality change too quickly.
— Can fish be put in a mini pond?
Not below a few hundred liters. Above 500 liters, two or three small fish may be considered with a small filter.
— How can mosquitoes be prevented in a mini pond?
With a small pump that agitates the water, while allowing natural predators of the larvae to establish themselves.
— Can a mini pond stay outside in winter?
Yes, if it is made of frost-resistant material and planted with hardy species. Terracotta pots are emptied and stored away.
In summary
- A healthy, watertight container of at least 100 to 150 liters.
- Four to six hours of sunlight, preferably in the morning.
- Dwarf water lily, marginal and oxygenating plants, in baskets.
- No fish in very small volumes; small wildlife will establish itself naturally.
