Pond filter overflowing: the causes and how to fix the problem

An overflowing filter is more than a nuisance: it can drain part of the pond in a few hours and put your fish at risk. The cause depends on the type of filter. Here is how to find it.

— In an emergency

  1. Unplug the pump.
  2. Check the pond level and top up with dechlorinated water if needed.
  3. Rinse the foams in pond water.
  4. Check the return hose before plugging back in.

Gravity filter: the 4 causes

— Clogged foams

This is the most common cause. Saturated foams no longer let the water through, so it rises up to the overflow. Rinse them in pond water, never under the tap, and only some of them at a time to preserve the bacteria.

— A pump that is too powerful

Every gravity filter has a maximum flow rate. Above it, the filter overflows, even when clean. Check that the pump's actual flow rate does not exceed the manufacturer's rating; if it does, adjust the pump or fit a bypass valve.

— A return that is too narrow or badly sloped

The water leaves by gravity: the return hose must be wider than the inlet, as short as possible, and run on a continuous downward slope with no high point or tight bend. A flattened hose or one colonised by algae also slows the flow.

— A filter that is not level

A filter that leans overflows on one side before the water reaches the outlet. Stand it on a stable slab and check it with a spirit level.

Pressure filter: a leak rather than an overflow

A pressure filter is sealed: if it loses water, it is usually through the lid or a fitting.

  • Lid not properly locked, or a seal that is pinched, dirty or dry.
  • Hose tail without a clamp, or a loose clamp.
  • Foams so clogged that the pressure forces the seals.

Clean the lid seal, grease it with silicone lubricant and replace it if it is cracked.

The filter is simply too small

If the filter clogs within a few days despite correct settings, it is not sized for the pond's load: too many fish, too much food or an underestimated volume. A larger filter that is easier to clean solves the problem for good.

Find the cause in fifteen minutes

An overflow always looks like a filter fault, when it is often a mismatch between the water coming in and the water that can get out. Work through the order below, starting with what you can check without tools.

Gravity filter: the check1. FoamsFlow back after rinsing? Clogging.2. OutletHose flattened, too narrow or high point?3. LevelFilter leaning? Wedge it level.4. FlowStill too much water? Measure and reduce.
Only move on to the next step if the previous one does not solve the problem.

Measuring your pump's actual flow rate

The flow rate printed on a pump is a maximum, measured with no head height and no hose. In real conditions it is lower, sometimes much lower. To find out what actually enters the filter, time how long it takes to fill a 10-litre bucket at the end of the hose, then divide 36,000 by the number of seconds: that gives the flow rate in litres per hour.

Worked example: if the bucket fills in 12 seconds, the actual flow rate is 3,000 l/h. Compare this figure with the maximum flow rate given in your filter's manual. If it is exceeded, the filter will overflow even when clean. If your pump cannot be adjusted, a bypass lets you send part of the water straight back to the pond or to a waterfall.

The calculation is useful the other way round too: if the flow is well below what you expect, the problem may be a dirty pump or a hose that is too narrow. Our pump and filter table gives the benchmarks for matching the two.

Stopping the problem from coming back

Once the cause is fixed, a few habits prevent it from happening again. In season, take a look at the filter every week, especially after more generous feeding or an algae bloom. Rinse the foams half at a time, in pond water, to keep the bacteria: our method to clean the filter without losing its bacteria covers each type of filter in detail.

Before going away for several days, clean the filter, then check the level and the return. Check the outlet hose in spring as well: deposits and algae slowly narrow it, and the overflow then appears with no visible change. Finally, if there is an overflow outlet, make sure it sends the water back to the pond.

After rinsing, don't walk away straight away. Stay by the filter for ten minutes: the water level should settle below the overflow. Mark this normal level on the wall with a marker pen, and use it as a reference at every check.

Frequently asked questions

— Why does my filter mostly overflow at night?

The foams gradually clog during the day and the limit is reached at night. It is a sign that more frequent cleaning, or a larger filter, is needed.

— Can I remove a foam to prevent the overflow?

As a stopgap, yes, but mechanical filtration drops and the water will turn cloudy. Fix the cause instead.

— How do I avoid draining the pond?

Position the filter overflow so that it drains back into the pond, and check the filter every week in season.

In summary

  • Gravity: foams, pump flow rate, return hose, level.
  • Pressure: lid, seal, clamps.
  • Rinse in pond water, half at a time.
  • Clogging too fast = undersized filter.
