Winterizing Your Pond: Preparing Fish and the Biological Balance for the Cold Season
In winter, a pond appears dormant. In reality, everything continues to live, simply at a slower pace. Fish are not hibernating like a hedgehog: they are animals whose temperature follows that of the water, and they spend the cold season in a state of torpor near the bottom. Winterizing a pond means ensuring three things for them until spring: a deep area that does not freeze, water that retains some oxygen, and a bottom that does not rot beneath them. Everything is prepared in autumn, while the water is still warm.
— The short answer
Make sure part of the pond offers sufficient depth, around 80 cm to 1 m in our regions. Switch to an easy-to-digest food when the water drops below 10 to 12°C, then stop feeding at around 5°C. Remove leaves and silt before severe cold sets in, add one last dose of bacteria while the water still allows it, place the air diffuser near the surface, and keep an opening in the ice. Observe your fish in October: this is the last opportunity to care for a weakened fish.

What happens underwater in winter
Freshwater is densest at around 4°C. In autumn, when the surface cools, cold water sinks and the pond mixes. Then, when the surface drops below 4°C, the order reverses: the coldest water remains at the top, may freeze, and a layer close to 4°C remains at the bottom. Limnology textbooks describe this phenomenon in detail. This is the bottom layer where your fish spend the winter, motionless or almost motionless.
Meanwhile, the silt and fallen leaves continue to decompose slowly, consuming oxygen. If ice covers everything, this oxygen is no longer replenished through the surface, and decomposition gases remain trapped. A pond rich in organic matter and completely covered by ice for several weeks is the ultimate high-risk situation.
Adjust feeding to the temperature
| Water (approximate range) | Fish behavior | Feeding |
|---|---|---|
| Above 15°C | Active, normal appetite | Quality complete food for building reserves |
| 10 to 15°C | Slow down | Easy-to-digest food, reduced quantities |
| 5 to 10 °C | Barely active, remain near the bottom | Small amounts of wheat-germ food, only if they ask for it |
| Below 5 °C | Torpor | No food |
The logic is simple: as the water cools, digestion slows considerably. Rich food given in November remains in the intestine for a long time, and anything uneaten rots on the bottom. Conversely, September is the right time to feed well: fish that enter winter in good condition cope better with the months of fasting.

Depth: the fish refuge
In our regions, ice on a garden pond rarely exceeds a few centimetres, but a small, shallow pond can freeze through much of its depth during a harsh winter. A zone at least 80 cm to 1 m deep, roughly speaking, gives fish a stable layer of water. If your pond is a 50- or 60-cm preformed pond, monitor cold spells, and for valuable koi, consider an overwintering tank in a garage or an unheated but frost-free greenhouse.
Oxygen: the right diffuser placement
Aeration remains useful in winter, provided you do not destroy the “warm” bottom layer of water. Raise the diffuser to about twenty centimetres below the surface: it maintains an opening in the ice and promotes gas exchange without stirring the entire volume. A bubbler left on the bottom in the middle of winter mixes the 4 °C layer where your fish rest with the icy surface water, cooling the entire pond.

A clean bottom and bacteria before the severe cold
Everything left on the bottom in November will decompose beneath your fish until March. Hence the importance of removing leaves and sludge accumulations before the severe cold sets in, then supporting the bacteria that break down the remaining organic matter. Their activity decreases with temperature, which is why manufacturers specifically recommend formulas for autumn and winter, to be applied according to their instructions.

October health check
Take ten minutes to observe your fish during feeding. A wound, clamped fins, a fish that stays apart or rubs itself: this is when you need to act. Fish pathology books remind us that fish immune defenses function slowly in cold water, and that treatment is less effective as the temperature drops. For the same reason, avoid introducing new fish in late autumn: they would not have time to acclimatize before winter.
Finally, leave a little life around the water. A few clumps of dry plants along the banks and a patch of leaves at the foot of a hedge provide shelter for insects and amphibians, which will return the favor in spring.

Frequently asked questions
— How deep does it need to be for fish to survive the winter?
As a general guideline, an area 80 cm to 1 m deep in our regions. In a shallower pond, watch for cold snaps and provide a frost-free overwintering tank for valuable fish.
— When should you stop feeding pond fish?
When the water stays around 5 °C for an extended period. Between 5 and 10 °C, give only small amounts of digestible food, and only if the fish are asking for it.
— Where should the air diffuser be placed in winter?
About twenty centimetres below the surface, not at the bottom. It keeps an opening in the ice without mixing the warmer layer of water where the fish rest.
— Can new fish be added in autumn?
It is better to wait until spring. In late autumn, newcomers do not have time to acclimatize, and their defenses are slowed by the cold water.
In summary
- A deep area that does not freeze, around 80 cm to 1 m deep.
- Feeding that follows the temperature, stopping at around 5 °C.
- An air diffuser raised close to the surface and an opening in the ice.
- A bottom cleared of leaves and sludge before the cold weather sets in.
- A health check in October, and no new fish before spring.
