Protect your pond from cats: how they fish, and the 6 solutions that really work (without harming them)

A cat sitting at the edge of a pond, paw suspended above the water, is an almost endearing sight… until the day three goldfish are missing. Unlike the heron, the cat almost never gets into the water: it fishes from the edge, swiping at fish passing within reach just below the surface. This is excellent news because it makes protection simple, discreet, and completely safe for the cat.

— The short answer

Keep the fish out of paw's reach: steep-edged banks or overhanging stones, no shallow beaches, and submerged refuges. Then prevent access to the edge with a motion-activated sprinkler or a low-power electric fence, and, for a small, highly exposed pond, a net. Avoid chemical repellents near the water: they end up in the pond.

How a cat fishes

The cat is an ambush hunter. It settles on a flat stone or low edge, motionless, and waits for a fish to pass through the first few centimeters of water. One swipe with its claws extended, and the fish is thrown onto the bank. It therefore mainly targets:

  • small fish, goldfish, shubunkins, young koi, which swim near the surface;
  • shallow areas, beaches, planting shelves, waterfall edges;
  • the times when the fish come up to the edge, especially at their usual feeding time;
  • frogs and newts, which it also readily hunts.

Typical clues include a fish abandoned on the lawn, sometimes barely nibbled, parallel scratches on the survivors' sides, and crushed marginal plants on one particular stone, always the same one.

Solution 1: keep the fish out of reach

This is the most elegant solution because it is permanent and invisible. A cat's paw can reach about ten centimeters below the surface from a low edge. A pond with steeply sloping banks, or bordered by stones that overhang the water, keeps the fish out of reach. Remove or densely plant the shallow shelves at the foot of the flat stones where the cat likes to sit.

Solution 2: provide refuges

Submerged shelters in the deep area, large-diameter pipes, slabs placed on supports, and large water lily leaves on the surface allow fish to escape view and attacks. Water lilies have a dual effect: they conceal the fish and shade the water, which also limits algae.

Solution 3: the motion-activated sprinkler

Very effective against cats, which hate getting wet. An infrared sensor triggers a brief, noisy jet of water as soon as an animal approaches. No danger, no chemicals, and the cat quickly associates the pond with an unpleasant experience. Aim it at the favorite fishing spot, and deactivate it when you are in the garden.

Solution 4: the low electric fence

A wire stretched about ten centimetres above the ground around the pond, powered by a low-power energizer designed for this purpose, deters cats, herons, and other visitors without harming them: the shock is unpleasant but harmless. One or two contacts are generally enough for the cat to permanently cross the pond off its rounds. Flag it if children play in the garden.

Solution 5: the net

For a small pond or a very exposed tank, a net stretched over the water permanently solves the problem, cats and herons included. It must remain elevated and firmly secured to the ground. It is also the simplest solution in autumn, when it protects against leaves at the same time.

Solution 6: landscaping the surroundings

Cats like comfortable observation posts and discreet approaches. Replace the large flat stone at water level with dense bank planting or uncomfortable round pebbles. Tall, bushy plants along the edges make approaching uncomfortable and hide the fish. Conversely, avoid creating a hiding place right next to the pond from which the cat can spring.

What not to do

False good idea Why
Chemical repellents in granules or spray around the pond Washed away by rain, they eventually end up in the water and can harm fish
Pepper, coffee grounds, essential oils in large quantities Highly inconsistent effectiveness and the introduction of unwanted substances into the water
Traps, spikes, harmful devices Cruel, often illegal, and dangerous for other animals
Ultrasound alone Results vary widely depending on the cat

And what about the neighbor?

The cat often belongs to someone in the neighborhood. A friendly conversation is better than a conflict: most owners do not know that their cat fishes. Explain that you have installed harmless protection, and you will avoid misunderstandings when the cat comes home soaked by the sprinkler.

Frequently asked questions

— Can a cat empty a pond of its fish?

It may regularly catch small fish swimming near the edge. Large koi and deep-dwelling fish are rarely affected.

— What is the most effective solution against cats?

The combination of a pond without a shallow edge and a motion-activated sprinkler or low electric fence.

— Is the electric fence dangerous for the cat?

No, if it is designed for this purpose: the shock is brief and unpleasant but harmless.

— Can cat repellents be used near a pond?

It is better to avoid them: rain carries them into the water, where they can harm fish.

In summary

  • The cat fishes from the edge with a swipe of its paw, in the first few centimeters of water.
  • Steep banks and hiding places keep fish out of reach.
  • A motion-activated sprinkler and low electric fence deter it without harming it.
  • A net solves everything for small ponds.
  • No chemical repellents near the water.
