Pond aerators

A pond aerator provides the oxygen that fish and filter bacteria need, especially in warm weather. Choose an air pump, a complete kit, or a surface aerator depending on the volume or surface area of the water.

How to choose a pond aerator?

  • Volume or surface area: for a garden pond, we calculate in m³; kits indicate their range (PondoAir Set 450: 3 to 7 m³, AquaOxy 1000: 5 to 10 m³). For a natural pond, we calculate in m² of surface area.
  • The air pump: Secoh JDK, Fujimac or Hiblow diaphragm pumps run continuously; their airflow is distributed among several diffusers.
  • The complete kit: pump, hoses and diffusers already matched: the simplest solution for a garden pond.
  • The surface aerator: floating fountain, emulsifier or aerator-injector churn large surfaces (AquaAir Eco 250 up to 250 m², Aquaforte 600 W floating fountain up to 1,500 m²).
  • Noise and location: place the pump in a sheltered, dry place above the water level, or in a box designed for this purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Why aerate a pond?

Warm water contains less oxygen, while fish and filter bacteria consume more. An aerator maintains a regular supply, especially at night, when plants no longer produce it.

Should a pond be aerated at night?

Yes. At night, plants consume oxygen instead of producing it: it is often at dawn that the level is lowest. Leave the aeration running continuously.

Which air pump for my pond?

Start with the volume of the pond and the number of fish, then choose a pump or kit whose range covers your volume. With koi, allow a margin.

Should you aerate in winter?

Gentle aeration can maintain an opening in the ice. Then raise the diffusers near the surface so as not to churn the deep zone where the fish rest.

How to maintain an air pump?

Clean the air filter and replace the diaphragms and valves when the flow decreases; diaphragm kits are available for most models.
