Native Americans continue to burn it in religious rituals because they believe its white smoke keeps evil spirits away and protects the village. It is valued for its mystical ability to convey good energies, purify and perfume the air, and foster a deep spiritual connection. In the regions where it originates, it is also used to make protective objects and decorations.
In order for palo santo to be of good quality, the wood must be harvested using a specific process. “Maturity is 50 to 70 years. Once the tree dies of natural causes, it must be kept in situ for at least 5 to 8 years so that the oils can mature enough to make quality incense,” according to Jonathon Miller Weisberger, an ethnobotanist and author of Rainforest Medicine: Preserving Indigenous Science and Biodiversity in the Upper Amazon.
Light the stick directly with a match, then wave it to extinguish the flame. Its delicious scent will diffuse into the air with the smoke. Remember that intention is the basis of any smudging ritual: if your heart is pure and your purpose noble, the effect will be enhanced. Palo Santo is easy to extinguish and can be used many times. Ventilate the room after use. Do not inhale the smoke directly.
