Copper and gold leaf. In Japan, these beautiful incense burners are objects of worship, precious gifts and an essential part of home decoration. Fill your incense burner with rice ash so that you can stick the incense sticks in it.
Having no bamboo support, these then burn completely without leaving a trace. In 1611, Maeda Toshinaga, lord of the Kaga domain in the city of Takaoka, invited seven metal molders to stimulate the region's economy.
This event marked the beginning of a long tradition of cast iron, with the know-how being passed down from generation to generation until today. Although it has declined in recent decades, the Takaoka region remains the most important cast iron production center in Japan.
Takaoka copper craftsmanship has even been recognized as a National Traditional Craft and an intangible cultural asset.
