Is salt important for my fish? What kind of salt should I use? How do I treat my fish with pond salt? Pond salt is something every fish or koi owner should have on hand at all times.
Not only does pond salt help boost your koi's natural defense against disease, it reduces the effect of nitrite toxicity, it also adds beneficial electrolytes to the water. When used at the correct dose, it will kill most common pests found in a pond. However, be careful not to overdo it, especially if you have plants.
Why use pond salt?
A salt bath for an aquarium or pond fish can stop possible external infections and reduce the osmotic pressure of your fish. This sudden change in salinity with salt water will burst the cells by change in osmotic pressure (osmotic shock).
This method, used mainly for freshwater fish, consists of putting pond water in a container ( quarantine tank for pond fish ), then adding appropriate pond or aquarium salt . This type of bath makes it possible, for example, to eliminate the white point.
Once the salt is well mixed in the water , we advise you to catch the fish without touching them with your hands and to immerse them in the salt water.
It is very important to use iodine-free (non-iodized) salt . This salt is an emergency treatment for your fish, koi carp, sailfish. It acts on a large part of parasites.
We recommend a short bath at 15G to 30G/L (2 to 3% max) for a good ten minutes with an aerator (diffuser for air pump) immersed in the container. This salt is also very active on mold. Attention, not to be used directly in a garden pond.
