How do I feed my baby (fry) koi? I have babies in the pelvis...

Some of our enthusiasts do not want spawning in the pool because they want to keep an exclusively Japanese line. However, many of you order koi spawning brushes from us.

This season you had koi fry and you wonder how to feed them? These baby (fry) koi need a specific food. When this protein-laden food is not available in the pond, you risk losing a lot of small koi or seeing malformations appear.

Many breeders in Japan use appropriate food for koi fry or use water fleas (MIJINKO type) as live food. If you have another small pond in your garden, we advise you to separate the small koi fry.

How does reproduction take place? After the hatching of the eggs, you can see small needles of + - 5MM, walking around in the basin. For the first 2 days you should not feed them. These fry consume their yolk sac which is located under the abdomen. When you notice the fry swimming freely in the water, you can start feeding with cooked egg yolk mixed with a specific food for fry.

You can feed these fry up to 12 times a day. We advise you to feed like this for about ten days. How not to give food that would not be suitable? It's easy, the food can't be bigger than the size of their eyes. Do not forget also to check the water parameters + oxygenation of the pool (if necessary water change of 10% per day max).

What is the optimum temperature for koi fry? From 20 to 28°C. When the temperature is above 25°C in the water, the fry will be able to grow properly and gain their weight once a day. It is therefore very important that the nitrogen cycle is well respected.

After several weeks (3 to 4), your fry will start to look like small koi. It will always be necessary to adapt the food to the size of your fish. Remember to check the condition of your filter to eliminate the organic pollution present in the pool.
