When should a pond be limed?

When should a pond be limed?

Is it mandatory to lime a pond? A pond is often treated with chalk-based lime amendments (Nautex) rather than lime. Incorrectly dosed lime can kill your entire ecosystem.

By adding substances such as chalk, which is limestone-based and rich in calcium, you can combat certain substances in the pond and improve water quality.

In short

Liming is not always necessary: first measure the pH at the end of the day and the total alkalinity. Liming is justified if the pH is below 6.5, if alkalinity is below 25 mg/l, or if the bottom is very muddy; it should be avoided if the evening pH exceeds 8.5. Chalk (calcium carbonate) is the mildest amendment. Slaked lime and quicklime require gloves, goggles, and dilution, and should never be dosed by eye.

25 mg/l minimum total alkalinity for water suitable for fish
75 to 175mg/l of CaCO3: cited optimal range
8.5evening pH above which you should not lime
100 g/m²maximum limit for lime and other liming products, according to this article. Nautex (coccolithic chalk): 100 g/m² per application, twice a year for maintenance; for shock treatment of a heavily silted pond, 150 to 200 g/m² the first time — never exceed 200 g/m².

Total alkalinity of a natural pond

For it to be beneficial to the development of your fish, the water must have a total alkalinity above 25 mg/l CaCO3. For optimal fish production, total alkalinity should range between 75 and 175 mg/l CaCO3 (see table below). The more optimal the total alkalinity of the water, the better protected your fish will be against external pollutants (copper sulfate, ...).

It indicates the extent to which the water's pH can vary and whether there is sufficient carbon dioxide availability.

Total alkalinity (mg/l of CaCO3) Approximately in °dKH Reading
Less than 25 less than 1.4 Insufficient: liming should be considered
25 to 75 1.4 to 4.2 Above the threshold of 25, below the optimal range
75 to 175 4.2 to 9.8 Optimal range for fish production
More than 175 more than 9.8 Beyond the cited range: no need to lime

Common conversion: 1 °dKH corresponds to approximately 17.9 mg/l of CaCO3. Commercial test kits most often give KH in °dKH.

The threshold of 25 mg/l and the range of 75 to 175 mg/l are those of the article and the FAO aquaculture manuals.

To measure, a carbonate hardness test is sufficient: see our KH test or our water analysis kits. If the KH is too low, our article how to increase the KH of a pond details the options.

When should you lime a pond?

It is not always necessary to lime a pond. Incorrectly dosed liming can be harmful to your fish. If you use a Nautex-type product, stick to 100 g/m² per application for maintenance, twice a year; only an initial shock treatment on a heavily silted pond justifies 150 to 200 g/m². There are several parameters to consider. With a pH that is too low, a lime treatment may be justified. In a pond with a lot of silt and organic matter, liming can improve soil conditions.

The thresholds come from the FAO aquaculture manuals; for an ornamental pond, be cautious and always measure before taking action.

How to lime a pond without emptying it?

It is advisable to dilute the lime with water. If the pond is small, you can sprinkle the lime from the banks; otherwise, you will need to use a boat. Be careful, plan for suitable equipment and gloves because this type of treatment can be abrasive. You should not use more than 100G/M² for lime. Liming is done in winter or early spring with slaked lime

Chalk, slaked lime or quicklime: what's the difference?

Three calcium products are used to amend a pond. They are neither equally strong nor carry the same risks, and they cannot be replaced gram for gram. The FAO gives their equivalents: 100 kg of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) corresponds to 70 kg of slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) and 55 kg of quicklime (CaO). The finer the particles, the more effective the action.

Amendment Formula For 100 kg of chalk To know
Chalk, calcium carbonate (including coccolithic chalk) CaCO3 100 kg The mildest; it is the usual choice for a pond, as the beginning of this article reminds us
Slaked lime (hydrated) Ca(OH)2 70 kg More reactive; dilute in water before spreading, with gloves and goggles
Quicklime CaO 55 kg The most reactive; can cause severe burns (FAO); reserved for equipped persons, not for a small ornamental pond

Coccolithic chalk is a natural calcium carbonate of sedimentary origin. The Nautex product sheet (also available in a 10 kg bucket) indicates that it works in two ways: physically, by flocculating suspended matter, and biologically, by participating in the degradation of organic matter in the sediment.

To incorporate chalk into a complete program against silt, read Nautex, SeDox Max and Bactovase: build a program for your pond.

What dose? Guidelines for water and for an emptied bottom

The guidelines below come from the FAO aquaculture manuals, converted to g/m² (1 hectare = 10,000 m²). They serve as a basis for consideration: in an ornamental or natural pond, be cautious, do not exceed the 100 g/m² ceiling given above for a pond with water (lime and other liming products; for Nautex: 100 g/m² per application, 150 to 200 g/m² the first time in shock treatment of a heavily silted pond, never exceeding 200 g/m²) and check the pH after each addition.

Situation FAO guideline (CaCO3) In g/m² To remember
Pond with water, evening pH below 6.5 150 to 200 kg/ha 15 to 20 g/m² Check the pH one week later
Pond with water, pH of 6.5 to 8.5 and alkalinity below 75 mg/l 150 to 200 kg/ha, at one-week intervals 15 to 20 g/m² per addition Repeat until improvement
Pond with water, evening pH above 8.5 No addition 0 Do not lime
Emptied and dry bottom (new pond or after dredging) 2,000 to 4,000 kg/ha depending on the soil 200 to 400 g/m² Before refilling with water; annual maintenance: one-quarter of the initial dose

For slaked lime, multiply the chalk dose by 0.7; for quicklime, by 0.55. Also correct according to the purity of the product: with chalk at 90% CaCO3, increase the dose by about 11%. Example for a 500 m² pond with water, with an evening pH of 6.2: 7.5 to 10 kg of chalk per addition, or 5.3 to 7 kg of slaked lime or 4.1 to 5.5 kg of quicklime. With fish, the FAO specifies not to exceed 200 kg/ha of quicklime per day (20 g/m²) and to keep a pH below 9.5.

Lime step by step, safely

  1. Measure the pH at the end of the day and the alkalinity (KH). The pH varies during the day: always measure at the same time.
  2. Decide with the decision tree above: without measurement, do not lime.
  3. Calculate the dose according to the product (equivalents and purity), without exceeding 100 g/m² in a pond with water (lime and other liming products; Nautex: never more than 200 g/m², and only in shock treatment the first time).
  4. Equip yourself: gloves, safety goggles, covering clothing, and a dust mask. In case of contact with the skin or eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water.
  5. Dilute the lime in water, then distribute the slurry from the banks or from a boat, without emptying the pond.
  6. Check the pH the same evening, then one week later, before any new addition.

Quicklime, slaked lime, and concentrated mixtures can cause severe burns. Never handle them with bare hands, and keep children and animals away during spreading.

Regarding the calendar, this article places liming in winter or early spring. In temperate aquaculture, the FAO places it rather in autumn after draining, or in spring before refilling with water. In all cases, it is the measurement that decides, not the date.

When not to lime

  • The evening pH exceeds 8.5.
  • The alkalinity is already in the range of 75 to 175 mg/l and the pH remains stable.
  • Water renewal is very fast: the effect of liming is then short-lived (FAO).
  • The soil pH exceeds 7.5: liming is of little use (FAO).
  • You hope to thus solve green water or algae: lime does not replace nutrient reduction, see our healthy natural pond guide.
  • You do not know the pH or alkalinity of your water.

Frequently asked questions

— When should you lime a pond?

When measurements justify it: pH below 6.5, total alkalinity below 25 mg/l, very muddy bottom or excessive organic matter. This article places liming in winter or early spring; in temperate aquaculture, the FAO places it in autumn after draining or in spring before refilling with water.

— Is lime dangerous for fish?

If incorrectly dosed, yes: it can make the pH rise too high. The FAO recommends not to exceed 200 kg/ha of quicklime (20 g/m²) per day in the presence of fish and to keep the pH below 9.5. Chalk, which is milder, is generally preferred, but it is also dosed to measure.

— Can you put quicklime in a pond?

It is not recommended for a small body of water: quicklime can cause severe burns and reacts with water. If you do, dilute it, wear gloves and goggles, do not exceed 20 g/m² of quicklime per day with fish and check the pH. Chalk or slaked lime are easier to control.

— What's the difference between quicklime, slaked lime and chalk?

Quicklime (CaO) is the most reactive, slaked lime (Ca(OH)2) is its hydrated form, chalk (CaCO3) is a milder calcium carbonate. For 100 kg of chalk, you need 70 kg of slaked lime or 55 kg of quicklime.

— What dose of lime for a pond?

On a pond with water, the FAO cites 150 to 200 kg of calcium carbonate per hectare, or 15 to 20 g/m², with a pH check one week later. For maintenance, this article recommends 100 g/m² per application. For Nautex: 100 g/m² twice a year (spring and autumn) for maintenance; 150 to 200 g/m² in shock treatment the first time, on a heavily silted pond; never exceed 200 g/m².

— Should you lime to limit silt?

Liming can improve the bottom of a heavily silted or organic-matter-rich pond, but it does not replace the reduction of inputs. Our guide for preventing silt and getting rid of it details the method.
