Granulés de Biobooster+ saupoudrés à la surface d'un bassin à carpes – Foudebassin

Biobooster+ instructions: dosage, application steps, and schedule for your pool

The pot is open, the measuring scoop is inside, and the question comes up: how much, where and when? Aquatic Science's Biobooster+ is one of the products we recommend most often for sludge and filamentous algae, and also one of the products we are most frequently asked about how to use. It is simple to use, but its effect is spectacular and may come as a surprise the first time. Used correctly, it comes down to three steps: measure the volume, sprinkle the right dose over sufficiently warm water, then remove what rises to the surface and add bacteria the next day.

— The short answer

Choose the pot suited to your pond's volume. When the water temperature rises above around ten degrees, sprinkle the granules over the surface, preferably where the water circulates, following the dose indicated on the label (the usual guideline is about two scoops per cubic metre). Leave the pump and aeration running. In the hours that follow, bubbles, foam and deposits rise to the surface: remove them with a net. The next day, add maintenance bacteria such as Bactogen. Repeat as needed throughout the season.

What Biobooster+ does, in two words

Biobooster+ is a granulated formulation designed to boost the activity of microorganisms that break down organic matter. The manufacturer presents it as effective against filamentous algae, sludge and organic deposits, and as supporting GH and KH thanks to its mineral base. In practice, fine bubbles form on contact with deposits and filaments, which detach and rise to the surface. This rising is what makes the effect so impressive, and it is what you need to plan for: the product does not make the waste disappear by magic; it detaches it so that you can remove it.

Before you start: three checks

The actual pond volume. This is the most common mistake. Length × width × average depth, not maximum depth, then a coefficient of about 0.6 to 0.8 for an irregular shape. A pond described as “10 m³” is often actually six or seven.

Water temperature. The microorganisms stimulated by the product are not very active in cold water. Wait until the water remains consistently above about ten degrees, the threshold the manufacturer also uses for its maintenance bacteria.

KH and pH. A quick test before treatment is a good habit. Biobooster+ has a mineral base that supports hardness; if your pH is already very high, talk to us first.

Which container and what dose?

Actual pond volume Recommended container size Note
Up to 3 m³ Biobooster+ 3 m³ Small ponds and patio ponds
3 to 6 m³ Biobooster+ 6 m³ The most common size for gardens
6 to 12 m³ Biobooster+ 12 m³ Medium-sized koi ponds
12 to 24 m³ Biobooster+ 24 m³ Large ponds, natural swimming pools
Over Biobooster+ 40 m³ or several containers Treat large bodies of water in zones

For the dose, always follow the instructions on the container label. As a rough guide, the usual amount is about two scoops per cubic metre for a complete treatment. It's better to start with the recommended dosage than to “load up” to speed things up: more deposits would rise to the surface, but it would not be more useful.

Day one, step by step

  1. Choose the right time. A morning rather than an evening during a heatwave: you'll have the day to collect the debris, and oxygen levels will be more comfortable.
  2. Keep the filtration and aeration running. Active decomposition consumes oxygen; keeping an air pump running is a safety measure.
  3. Sprinkle the dose over the surface, focusing on areas where the water circulates and above zones of filamentous algae or sludge.
  4. Observe. After a few minutes to a few hours, fine bubbles, white foam, and clumps of debris appear. This is the expected effect.
  5. Collect it. Use a fine-mesh net or skimmer to remove anything floating, several times during the day. Anything you remove will not settle again.
  6. Clean the pre-filter in the evening if the pump has sucked up a lot of debris.

Don't panic when the water is a little cloudy and foam appears during the first few hours: it is detached sludge rising to the surface, not a toxic reaction. Simply monitor the fish's behavior; if they come to gulp air at the surface, increase aeration.

The next day: add bacteria

Biobooster+ clears the debris; you then need a bacterial culture to "digest" what remains suspended and restart biological filtration. The manufacturer recommends following it with Bactogen, its blend of spore-forming bacteria, stating that a Biobooster+ treatment the day before improves the bacteria's effectiveness. Bactogen should be distributed over the surface where circulation is best, once the water exceeds 10 °C, at the rate indicated on its label (around two scoops per 5 m³, three to four times a month). If you have a UV lamp, switch it off for one to two days after adding the bacteria.

How often should it be renewed?

There is no universal rule: it depends on the fish load, falling leaves, and sunlight. The approach we most often see working in Belgium is a spring treatment, when the water stays above 10 to 12 °C, followed by a repeat treatment in summer if the filaments return, and sometimes one final treatment at the beginning of autumn to clear deposits before winter. In between, maintenance bacteria and reasonable feeding do the work.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating in cold water in March because "the sludge is visible": the effect will be limited.
  • Don't forget the net: debris that rises to the surface and is left there will sink back to the bottom.
  • Turn off the air pump on the day of treatment.
  • Mixing it on the same day with another water treatment: leave a few days between them and ask for advice if in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

— How much Biobooster+ should be added per cubic metre?

Follow the pot label, which is authoritative. The usual rule of thumb is around two scoops per cubic metre, for a correctly calculated actual volume.

— Is Biobooster+ dangerous for fish?

The manufacturer declares it safe for fish and filtration. Keep aeration running during treatment, because active decomposition consumes oxygen.

— Why is there foam after treatment?

The bubbles detach sludge and string algae and bring them to the surface. This is the expected effect: remove the foam and debris with a skimmer net.

— Is it absolutely necessary to add bacteria again after Biobooster+?

It is highly recommended. Maintenance bacteria added the next day break down the remaining organic matter and restart biological filtration.

In summary

  • Calculate the actual volume and choose the corresponding pot.
  • Treat when the water is above around ten degrees, with filtration and aeration running.
  • Dose according to the label, sprinkling it where the water circulates.
  • Skim off anything that rises to the surface during the day.
  • Add maintenance bacteria the next day, with the UV turned off for one to two days.
