Building a glass-sided koi pond: glass, thickness, waterproofing, and mistakes to avoid

Seeing your koi swimming at eye level, like in a giant aquarium, is the dream of many enthusiasts. Yet a glazed pond is the least forgiving construction there is: an undersized pane, a poorly designed seal, or poor water quality, and the project turns into a nightmare. Here are the principles to know before drawing even the first plan.

— The short answer

The pane is installed in a structural wall (reinforced concrete or reinforced masonry), never in a simple slope. Laminated glass or an acrylic panel is used, with the thickness calculated by a professional based on the water height and the viewing window dimensions. Watertightness is achieved with a clamping frame on the liner or by structural bonding into a rebate. And without properly sized filtration, UV, and bottom drain, you will not see anything through the pane.

Understanding water pressure

It all starts with physics. The pressure exerted by water increases linearly with depth: around 0.1 bar per meter, or nearly one tonne per square meter at a depth of one meter. The bottom of the glass therefore supports much more than the top. Two practical consequences:

  • the water height above the bottom of the glass is the primary sizing factor;
  • a long viewing window bends more than a short one of the same height, which is why it is best to divide a large viewing window into several panels separated by mullions.

What glass thickness is needed for a koi pond?

There is no single figure: the thickness is calculated based on the water height, the pane length, the mounting method, and a high safety factor. For koi pond viewing windows, it quickly exceeds 20 mm. Always have the sizing approved by a glazier specializing in public aquariums or structural glazing, and never improvise with salvaged glass.

Material Advantages Limitations
Laminated glass Highly scratch-resistant, stays in place if it breaks thanks to the interlayers Heavy, delicate installation, costly replacement
Acrylic (PMMA) Lighter, highly transparent, possible shapes Scratches during cleaning; thermal expansion must be taken into account
Single glass None Not recommended: in the event of breakage, the glass fails suddenly

Waterproofing around the glass

There are two main families of solutions.

EPDM liner pond: the liner is clamped between two parts of a clamping frame, often made of stainless steel, screwed into the structural wall, with seals, and the glass is then installed in this frame. This is the most common solution for private individuals, as the rest of the pond is built like a conventional pond.

Concrete pond: the glass is bonded into a rebate made in the concrete, using a suitable structural sealant, after waterproofing the basin. This technique requires flawless execution.

In both cases, the wall supporting the glass must be designed to withstand the water pressure and the weight of the glass, and rest on a stable foundation. This is a civil engineering structure, not gardening.

Without clear water, the glass shows nothing

This is the aspect most often underestimated. Through a glass panel, you can see the water across the entire depth of the pond: the slightest turbidity is noticeable. A glass-sided pond therefore requires filtration sized far above the actual volume, ideally with gravity-fed filtration and a bottom drain, plus a powerful UV-C system to combat suspended algae.

Orientation and maintenance

  • Avoid a south-facing window: it encourages reflections and algae on the inside surface. A shaded or north-facing window offers the best view.
  • Plan for cleaning the inside surface: a film of algae regularly builds up there. Use a sponge or a non-abrasive tool, especially on acrylic.
  • Protect the outside surface from impacts: lawnmowers, tools, balls.
  • Think about frost: the glass panel is an area of heat loss. A deep, well-designed pond remains stable, but keep an eye on harsh winters.

Koi that show themselves

One final practical tip: koi naturally gather in front of the pane if meals are associated with it. Feeding them near the viewing window with a high-quality, highly digestible food gets them used to coming there while limiting waste that could cloud the water.

Frequently asked questions

— Can a pane be installed in an existing liner pond?

It is possible but laborious: you need to build a structural wall, cut the liner, and clamp it into a frame. In practice, this often means rebuilding a significant part of the pond.

— Glass or acrylic?

Laminated glass is more resistant to scratches and ages very well. Acrylic is lighter and allows for curved shapes, but scratches easily during cleaning.

— Can the pane freeze or break in winter?

A correctly sized pane in a deep pond is not at risk from surface frost. The point to watch is ice pushing against the edges at the top of the viewing window: never break the ice nearby.

— Is a permit required for a glass-sided pond?

It depends on your municipality and the scale of the project. Check with your planning department before starting work.

In summary

  • Pressure increases with depth: the bottom of the pane bears the load.
  • Laminated glass or acrylic, thickness calculated by a professional.
  • Structural wall and clamping frame or structural bonding.
  • Oversized filtration, UV, and bottom drain for crystal-clear water.
