How often should a UV lamp in a pond be replaced?

A pond UV-C lamp should generally be replaced after 8,000 to 12,000 operating hours, which is approximately one full season or one year when it runs continuously. The simplest rule is to plan to replace it every year, ideally at the beginning of spring, even if it continues to turn on.

A UV-C bulb can indeed produce visible light even when its useful ultraviolet output has significantly decreased. The pond may then turn green again, not because the lamp is switched off, but because it no longer emits enough UV-C to act effectively on suspended microalgae.

— The four-check method for your UV-C

  1. Check the bulb's actual age: note its installation date and estimate its operating hours.
  2. Check the entire system: inspect the flow rate, the condition of the quartz, seals and filtration.
  3. Order the exact reference: the power rating, length, base and ballast must be compatible with the unit.
  4. Replace it safely: work with the power switched off, clean the quartz and check the seal before putting it back into service.

Why replace a pond UV-C lamp?

— A lit bulb is not always an effective bulb

A UV-C lamp produces two distinct phenomena: visible light that can sometimes be seen inside the unit, and invisible ultraviolet radiation that acts on microscopic organisms passing through the UV chamber.

Over time, the lamp often continues to turn on. However, its UV-C output gradually decreases. This aging is normal: a pond bulb does not necessarily fail overnight, but gradually loses effectiveness.

A UV-C lamp should therefore be replaced based on its age and operating hours, not only when it stops turning on.

— What UV-C treats… and what it does not treat

UV-C acts primarily on suspended microalgae responsible for green water. When they pass through the unit, UV-C radiation weakens them; they can then clump together and be retained more easily by mechanical filtration.

However, a UV-C does not replace properly sized mechanical filtration, maintained biological filtration, appropriate feeding management or the removal of leaves, sludge and organic waste.

UV-C is not a direct solution for filamentous algae attached to stones, planting baskets or walls. These visible algae require manual removal and correction of their underlying causes.

How often should a UV lamp be changed?

— The operating-hours rule

The lifespan of a UV-C lamp is generally expressed in hours. For many standard UV-C lamps, the figure to bear in mind is between 8,000 and 12,000 hours, with a common benchmark of around 9,000 hours.

If your device operates 24 hours a day, all year round, 9,000 hours correspond to approximately twelve months of service. In this configuration, annual replacement is a prudent and easy-to-follow rule.

Some specific technologies, particularly Air-Aqua amalgam lamps, have a longer stated lifespan of around 13,000 hours depending on the model. They are designed to maintain high output for longer, but it remains essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions and check the condition of the quartz.

— Annual replacement: the best habit

For a garden pond, the most convenient time to change the UV-C lamp is often at the beginning of spring, when restarting the filtration system.

  • The pond benefits from optimal UV power before the green water period.
  • The quartz, seals and connections can be checked at the same time.
  • The replacement date becomes easy to remember.
  • You avoid a drop in performance in the middle of the season.

Two uses, two schedules

— If the UV operates only during the season

Seasonal operation: when the UV-C operates mainly from spring to autumn, the bulb can sometimes be used for more than one season depending on its actual number of operating hours. However, do not wait several years without checking: a lamp that still lights up may already have lost a large part of its UV-C effectiveness.

In this configuration, note the installation date and operating periods. Check the quartz every time you restart the system and plan to have a compatible bulb ready before the season if the old one is approaching its stated service life.

— If the UV operates 24 hours a day year-round

Continuous operation: a standard UV-C lamp used 24 hours a day generally reaches its replacement threshold after approximately twelve months. Annual replacement is therefore the simplest way to maintain the unit's performance.

This precaution is particularly useful in heavily stocked ponds, koi ponds, installations highly exposed to sunlight, or filtration systems that operate year-round.

How can I tell if the UV lamp needs replacing?

— Signs of reduced efficiency

  • The water is gradually becoming greener even though the pond was usually clear.
  • The lamp is approaching or has exceeded its recommended service life.
  • The ends of the bulb are heavily blackened.
  • The operating indicator no longer lights up.
  • The quartz is opaque, scaled, or covered with biofilm.
  • The flow through the UV unit is disrupted by a dirty pump or filtration system.

Green water does not automatically mean that the lamp has stopped working. Dirty quartz, an unsuitable flow rate, saturated mechanical filtration, or an excessive organic load can produce the same result.

— The pre-order checklist

  1. Record the exact brand and model of the UV-C.
  2. Check the power, length, base, and number of pins of the old bulb.
  3. Look for the reference marked on the lamp or in the instructions.
  4. Check the condition of the quartz tube and seals.
  5. Visually check the ballast, cable, and connectors.
  6. Note the date of the last replacement before ordering.

The quartz tube: maintenance that makes all the difference

— Why clean the quartz every time you replace it?

The quartz tube is the glass protection surrounding the UV-C bulb and isolating it from the water. It lets UV radiation pass through while protecting the lamp from moisture.

Over time, it can become covered with limescale, biofilm, organic deposits, or fine particles. Even if the bulb is new, these deposits can severely limit the amount of UV-C that passes through the quartz and reaches the water.

Replacing the bulb is therefore the right time to check and gently clean the quartz. Avoid abrasive sponges, metal tools, and products not recommended by the manufacturer.

— When should the quartz tube be replaced?

The quartz tube should be replaced when it has a crack, chip, significant scratch, persistent clouding, or a leak. Also check the seal: a deformed, cracked, or insufficiently watertight seal should be replaced.

Changing a UV-C bulb safely

— The seven-step procedure

  1. Switch off the UV-C power supply and unplug the unit.
  2. Stop the pump and isolate the UV unit with the valves if your installation allows it.
  3. Allow the unit to cool, especially after several hours of operation.
  4. Open the UV housing by following the steps specified by the manufacturer.
  5. Remove the old bulb without forcing the socket and without unnecessarily touching the glass of the new lamp.
  6. Check the quartz, seals, and connectors, then clean any components that require it.
  7. Install the compatible bulb, reassemble the unit, check the watertightness, and gradually put the system back into service.

Safety: never look directly at a lit UV-C lamp and never power the unit when it is open. Any leak, unusual odor, overheating, or electrical fault requires the system to be shut down immediately.

— Never increase the wattage without changing the unit

Replacing a 9 W bulb with a 24 W bulb does not improve a UV-C system. The bulb, ballast, socket, length, quartz tube, UV chamber volume, and heat dissipation are designed to work together.

Never install a more powerful lamp without the manufacturer's explicit approval for the exact model concerned. An incompatible bulb may fail to light, damage the ballast, cause overheating, compromise watertightness, or void the warranty.

If the device is undersized for the volume, sunlight exposure, or fish load, the solution is to choose a suitable complete UV-C device rather than modifying the bulb alone.

Standard bulb, Philips, Air-Aqua amalgam, or complete kit?

— Standard Philips UV-C bulbs

Philips UV-C bulbs are used in many pond devices. They are available in different wattages, lengths, and base types, including 6 W, 9 W, 16 W, or PL-L, depending on the compatible devices.

They are a suitable solution when replacing an original lamp like-for-like. Exact compatibility with the UV model always takes priority over choosing a higher wattage.

— Air-Aqua amalgam lamps

Air-Aqua amalgam technologies are suitable for installations requiring high output: koi ponds, large volumes, heavily exposed ponds, or systems with a high organic load.

These lamps stand out for their advertised longer service life and generally slower decline in UV output than some standard lamps. Some Air-Aqua models are advertised at around 13,000 hours.

However, an amalgam lamp does not automatically replace a standard bulb. It must be used in a device designed for this technology, with the corresponding ballast and quartz sleeve.

UV-C, bacteria, and biological filtration

— Should you switch off the UV after adding bacteria?

When a bacterial product is added to a pond, the bacteria must attach to the filter media, foam, Japanese mats, bio-ceramics, or walls to form a beneficial biofilm.

UV-C acts on organisms that circulate freely in the water. Temporarily switching off the UV after adding bacteria therefore helps limit their exposure before they attach to the filter media.

Foudebassin generally recommends switching it off for approximately 48 hours after adding bacteria, then switching it back on once the bacteria have begun to colonize the media. The instructions for the bacterial product used take priority.

Frequently asked questions

— Is a UV lamp that turns on necessarily effective?

No. A lamp can continue to produce visible light while having lost a significant portion of its UV-C radiation. The bulb's age, operating hours, and the condition of the quartz are more reliable indicators.

— Can I install a more powerful UV lamp in my device?

No, unless the manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility with your specific model. A more powerful bulb may be incompatible with the ballast, socket, length, quartz sleeve, and UV chamber.

— Can a UV-C unit eliminate filamentous algae?

No, not directly. UV-C mainly acts on suspended unicellular algae responsible for green water. Filamentous algae require manual removal and correction of nutrient levels, sludge, filtration, and vegetation.

— Should I leave the UV running all year?

This depends on your setup, water temperature, objective, and the manufacturer's recommendations. Many ponds use UV mainly during the algae-growing season. Koi ponds or ponds with a heavy load may operate it for longer. There is no single rule that applies to every pond.

— Why does the water remain green after replacing the lamp?

Check the quartz tube, flow rate, UV power and sizing, the condition of the mechanical filtration, the organic load, and the water parameters. A new bulb alone cannot compensate for a clogged filter or a pond heavily loaded with nutrients.
