Pond plant kit: what does it contain, which one should you choose, and how do you install it?

The scene is familiar: you come home from the garden center with three beautiful aquatic plants, repot them in flowerpots using garden soil, and two weeks later the water is brown, the plants have lost their soil, and the fish have finished the job. Pond planting kits were created to prevent this scenario. A good kit brings together the plant, the slotted basket, water-appropriate soil, and cover gravel: everything that makes the difference between a plant that takes hold and one that withers.

— The short answer

A pond plant kit generally contains one or more young plants, a slotted basket, a bag of aquatic soil, and a bag of gravel. Choose a water lily kit for the deep zone, a marginal plant kit for the shelves, a floating basket if your pond has no shelf, and a large pre-planted pot if you want immediate results. Installation takes a quarter of an hour: soil, plant, gravel, then gradually place it in the water.

What's in a kit, and why

Every element addresses a common mistake. The slotted basket lets water circulate around the roots, unlike a solid flowerpot where the soil becomes oxygen-deprived. The aquatic soil is heavy and low in nutrients: it stays in the basket and does not release nutrients into the water, whereas garden soil floats, clouds the water, and feeds algae. The gravel covers the surface of the basket to prevent the soil from rising and fish from rummaging. As for the plant, it is young, packaged for shipping without drying out, and ready to get started.

Kit type Typical contents Who it's for Where to place it
Marginal plant kit 1 to 3 plants, basket approximately 19 cm, aquatic soil, gravel All ponds with shelves Shallow shelf
Water lily kit Water lily rhizome, basket, aquatic soil, gravel Ponds with a sunny deep zone Shallow at first, then a deep zone
Filled floating basket Several marginal plants in a floating basket Preformed ponds, basins without shelves At the surface, anywhere
Large pre-planted pot Fully grown plant in a large basket Immediate results, ponds Directly at its final depth

Kit or individual plants?

The kit is ideal for a first pond, for an online order, or when you do not want to search for the right potting soil and basket. It ensures that the plant gets off to a good start in the right conditions. Individual plants, bought from an aquatic nursery, are useful for a large project or particular species, provided you already have baskets and substrate. Many ponds combine the two: a few kits for feature plants and bare-root plants to fill in the rest.

Which kit for which pond?

  • Small pond or patio tub: a water lily kit if the depth and sunlight allow it, and a filled floating basket for vertical interest.
  • Preformed pond with narrow shelves: marginal plant kits with a compact basket, or a floating basket that requires no shelf.
  • Medium garden pond: a trio of water lilies for the deep zone and one or two marginal plant kits.
  • Clear-water goal: favour vigorous marginal plants, combined with oxygenating plants.
  • Pond: a large pre-planted pot can be placed directly at its final depth, with no intermediate step.

Installing a kit, step by step

  1. Unpack upon receipt and keep the plant moist and in the shade until planting.
  2. Fill the basket with potting soil to about two-thirds full, pressing it down lightly.
  3. Position the plant: roots in the soil, crown level with the surface of the potting soil. For a water lily, place the rhizome almost flat, with the bud exposed.
  4. Cover with gravel to a depth of one or two centimetres, without burying the shoots.
  5. Gently wet the basket with a watering can before placing it in the water, to expel air without washing away the soil.
  6. Place it shallow at first: young plants establish better with only the top of the plant at the waterline. Lower them to their final depth once they have grown stronger.

The most common mistake with a water lily kit is placing it straight on the bottom: a young rootstock whose leaves do not reach the surface becomes exhausted. If your pond has no intermediate shelf, raise the basket on a few bricks and remove them over the following weeks.

After planting

During the first season, leave it alone: no fertilizer, just keep an eye on yellowing leaves and remove them. From the following spring onward, a slow-release fertilizer tablet pushed into the basket supports flowering. After two or three years, the plant fills its basket: that is the time to divide it, and the kit's basket can be reused.

Frequently asked questions

— What does a pond plant kit contain?

Generally one or more young plants, an openwork basket, a bag of aquatic potting soil and a bag of cover gravel.

— Can garden soil be used instead?

No: it is too light, rises to the surface and releases nutrients that promote algae.

— How long can you keep a kit before planting it?

A few days, with the plant kept moist and in the shade. The sooner it is planted, the better it gets established.

— Which kit should you choose for a preformed pond without a shelf?

A filled floating basket, or kits placed on bricks to recreate a shallow zone.

In summary

  • A kit includes a plant, an openwork basket, aquatic potting soil and gravel.
  • Water lily for the deep zone, marginal plant for shelves, floating basket without a shelf.
  • Installation in fifteen minutes: soil, plant, gravel, gradual placement in water.
  • No fertilizer during the first season, divide after two or three years.
