When do goldfish spawn? Signs that spawning is about to happen in the pond
One morning in May, the usually peaceful pond seems to be boiling: goldfish chase one another at top speed among the plants, splash the surface, and persistently jostle one of them. Don't panic, this is neither a fight nor an illness. It is very likely spawning, and it follows fairly predictable triggers: water temperature, day length, and the condition of the fish. Knowing how to read them allows you to anticipate what will happen, whether you want fry or not.
— The short answer
In ponds, goldfish spawn when the water stays warm in spring, generally around 15 to 20 °C, most often between late April and July in our climates. Spawning generally takes place early in the morning, after several mild, sunny days, and may happen several times during the season. Warning signs include males covered in small white tubercles, females with rounded bellies, and increasingly persistent chasing.

What triggers spawning
The goldfish is a domesticated carp, and like its wild cousins it reproduces in spring. Three factors combine.
Temperature comes first. As long as the water remains cold, the eggs mature slowly. When it stabilizes above around 15 degrees for several days, ready females can spawn. An early heat wave in April often brings the first spawning forward; a miserable spring delays it by several weeks.
Light comes next. Longer days contribute to hormonal regulation. That is why spawning in the middle of winter in an outdoor pond does not happen, even during a warm spell.
The condition of the fish finally. You need mature fish, generally from their second year onward, well fed after winter and in clean water. A partial water change or warm rain, bringing in slightly different water, is sometimes enough to provide the final signal.
Signs that spawning is imminent
| Who | What you see | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| Males | Small white tubercles on the gills and the edge of the pectoral fins | Sexual maturity, breeding season open |
| Females | Round belly, sometimes asymmetrical when viewed from above | Eggs developing |
| Group | Persistent chasing, males pushing against a female's side | Spawning within the following hours or days |
| Pond | Splashes in the plants at daybreak, slightly foamy water | Spawning in progress or just finished |
Do not confuse the males' breeding tubercles with white spot disease: the spawning bumps are aligned and limited to the head and pectoral fins, on an otherwise very active fish.

The spawning process
Spawning most often takes place between dawn and late morning. The males press the female against submerged plants, the roots of floating plants, or the sides; she releases her eggs in small batches, fertilized immediately. The sticky eggs, about one millimeter in size, attach to whatever they touch. An adult female releases roughly several hundred to a few thousand. The activity subsides within a few hours, and the chases may resume two or three weeks later with another female.
Adults readily eat the eggs: in a pond without dense plants, the vast majority disappear within a few hours.
After spawning: hatching and fry
Incubation lasts a few days, and is shorter in warmer water. The larvae initially remain attached to the plants, living off their reserves, then begin to swim and search for tiny prey. The young are initially brown-grey; many do not develop their red or orange color until several months later, and some never do.
You have two options. Let nature take its course: a few fry survive in planted areas, which is often enough to renew the population, sometimes too much. Or collect them: remove the brush or plants covered with eggs the same day, place them in a tank filled with pond water, gently aerated, away from direct sunlight.

And what if you don't want babies?
In a pond without predators, goldfish can multiply faster than the filter can handle. A common case: five fish to start with, forty three years later, and water quality that no longer holds. To limit births, keep open areas, regularly remove supports covered with eggs during the season, and offer the young fish to other pond owners. Never release them into a watercourse or natural pond.

Frequently asked questions
— At what temperature do goldfish spawn?
As a general guideline, when the water stabilizes at around 15 to 20 °C for several days in spring, as the days grow longer.
— What time of day does spawning take place?
Most often early in the morning, from dawn until late morning, often after a series of mild, sunny days.
— How many times a year does a goldfish spawn?
A healthy female can spawn several times during the same season, a few weeks apart, from late spring through midsummer.
— Do goldfish eat their eggs?
Yes, very much so. Only eggs hidden in dense plants or removed from the pond have a real chance of hatching.
