The quality of the filter material largely determines the efficiency of an aquarium filter! Most aquarium filters are already equipped with sponges as filter media. Sponges actually have a fairly large surface which, over time, will be colonized by bacteria useful for the degradation of polluting substances.
Small ceramic tubes are the ideal pre-filtration medium since, thanks to their tubular shape, they are able to retain dirt well, without clogging up as quickly as sponges, for example! They can be rinsed quickly under tap water and they are immediately ready to be used again.
The small tubes lend themselves perfectly to colonization by useful depolluting bacteria, both on their exterior and interior face. However, their surface area is significantly smaller than that of sintered glass cylinders, such as those of the JBL SintoMec.
This is why we recommend ceramic tubes as the pre-filtration material and sintered glass cylinders as the main filtration material, even though both types of tubes can perfectly perform both functions.
