Bactéries dans un étang en automne – Foudebassin

Can bacteria still be added to a pond in autumn? Until when and why

By the end of September, the days are getting shorter, the first birch leaves are floating on the water and many pond owners put away their bucket of bacteria, thinking the season is over. This is often too early. As long as the pond water remains above approximately 10 °C, maintenance bacteria are still active, and autumn is even one of the periods when they provide the most benefits. The key is knowing how long to continue, and how to adapt the doses.

— The short answer

Yes, you can and should continue adding bacteria in autumn, as long as the water temperature remains above approximately 10 °C, the threshold indicated by most manufacturers. This is when leaves and dead algae accumulate: active bacteria limit the sludge that would otherwise form during winter. Once temperatures remain below 10 °C, stop and resume in spring.

Why autumn matters so much for pond biology

In just a few weeks, a pond receives more organic matter than it does over several summer months. Leaves from nearby trees, yellowing bank plants, decaying water lilies, filamentous algae dying off in the cold: all of this sinks and settles on the bottom. Wetzel describes this phenomenon clearly in limnology: the decomposition of this material consumes oxygen and releases nutrients, particularly in the deeper layers.

If the bacteria still have enough warmth to break down some of this debris before winter, the layer of sludge that remains through the cold season will be thinner. If nothing happens, the material accumulates, slowly ferments under the ice and resurfaces in spring as nutrients, right when algae start growing again. Many green waters in April are actually prepared in October.

Temperature, the only real criterion

The calendar does not tell us much: a mild October in Walloon Brabant can keep the water at 14 °C, while a small, shallow pond drops below 10 °C as soon as the first cold spell arrives. The bacteria sold for pond maintenance are living organisms whose activity slows considerably in cold weather. Manufacturers state this clearly: Aquatic Science recommends Bactogen as soon as the water rises above 10 °C, while Aquipond gives the same minimum usage temperature for Bacto Maintenance.

Water temperature Bacterial activity What to do in autumn
Above 15 °C Still good Normal maintenance dosage, or even increased after cleaning
10 to 15 °C Slowed but ongoing Continue, targeting areas where leaves accumulate
Around 10 °C Limit for most products Last dose of the season
Below 10 °C for an extended period Very low Stop, resume in spring

Measure the temperature at a depth of 50 cm in the late morning, not at the surface in full sun: that is the temperature that matters for the filter and the bottom. A floating thermometer left permanently in the pond avoids guesswork.

The right order: clean first, then seed

Bacteria cannot work miracles on a twenty-centimeter carpet of leaves. Autumn maintenance therefore follows a logical order:

  1. Remove the bulk: scoop out leaves with a net, cut faded plants above the water, and stretch a net over the pond if trees overhang it.
  2. Vacuum the sludge if the layer is thick, doing it in one or two sessions rather than all at once.
  3. Check the KH: autumn rains lower it, and bacteria work poorly in water without a carbonate reserve.
  4. Seed the pond in the following days, targeting calm areas where debris settles and the filter inlet.

Switch off the UV for the period specified by the manufacturer after each application, and maintain good circulation: the bacteria that break down organic matter consume oxygen.

Should you change the dose in autumn?

Two situations may arise. If the pond has been cleaned and leaf fall is heavy, a slightly increased maintenance dose for two or three weeks is appropriate, within the limits stated in the instructions. If the pond is already clean and not heavily exposed to trees, the usual schedule is sufficient. Overdosing in the hope of compensating for the cold is pointless: it is not a lack of bacteria, but the heat that slows their metabolism.

Remember the fish too. As temperatures drop, switch to a more digestible food and reduce the portions. Less food means less nitrogenous waste, so the filter can devote its energy to plant debris.

The last dose before winter

The final application is made when the temperature approaches 10 °C, often between mid-October and early November here, depending on the year and the pond's depth. It has a dual role: treating the last debris and leaving an established bacterial population in the filter and on the bottom, which will become active again more quickly in spring. If your filter remains running during winter, do not clean it thoroughly after this dose: its bacteria are your capital for March.

A common case: two similar ponds, beneath the same type of trees. In the first, we clean and add bacteria until the end of October; in the second, we stop everything in September. The following spring, the first generally regains clear water within a few weeks; the second often has to be cleared of black, foul-smelling sludge before the bottom can be seen again.

Frequently asked questions

— At what temperature should bacteria application be stopped in autumn?

When the water remains below approximately 10 °C for an extended period, the minimum threshold indicated by most manufacturers.

— Do the bacteria break down dead leaves that have fallen into the pond?

They speed up the breakdown of fine debris, but whole leaves must first be removed with a net.

— Should the UV be switched off when adding bacteria in autumn?

Yes, for the duration indicated by the manufacturer, often one to two days, so as not to destroy the suspended bacteria.

— Does adding bacteria in October help in spring?

Yes: less sludge at the start of winter means fewer nutrients released when algae start growing again.

In summary

  • The bacteria remain active in autumn as long as the water is above approximately 10 °C.
  • This is the period when organic matter flows in: their usefulness is at its peak.
  • Clean first, check the KH, then add the bacteria.
  • One final dose at around 10 °C, then leave the filter alone.
