How and where to buy a filter for your pond: the checklist before ordering

Choosing a type of filter is one thing. Going ahead with the purchase is another: between DIY store aisles, garden centers, online shops, and second-hand listings, the offers look alike and the numbers on the labels do not always mean the same thing. A good filter purchase starts with four pieces of information (actual volume, fish, sunlight, and location) and is judged by three criteria that are often overlooked: actual capacity with fish, availability of spare parts, and what is actually included in the box.

— The short answer

Before buying, measure the pond's actual volume, note the type and number of fish, the amount of sunlight, and where the filter will be installed (next to or higher than the pond). Preferably buy from a specialist seller, in-store or online, who can advise you and supply foam, UV lamps, and parts for years to come. On the product page, read the capacity indicated with fish (not just the maximum without fish) and check whether the pump, UV, and pipes are included.

Information to gather before buying

A reputable seller will ask you these questions; having the answers ready will save you time and prevent you from choosing an undersized filter.

  • Actual volume: length × width × average depth (not maximum depth), taking the shelves into account. We almost always overestimate our pond's volume.
  • Fish: none, a few goldfish, or koi. This is the factor that most affects the filter size.
  • Sunlight: a pond in full sun requires more capacity margin, especially for the UV.
  • Location: a gravity filter must be installed higher than the pond so the water can flow back into it; a pressure filter can be buried or placed at a distance.
  • What you already have: pump already in place (flow rate, outlet diameter), pipes, and a nearby electrical outlet.

Where to buy a pond filter?

Purchasing channel Advantages Limitations
Aquatic garden center or specialty store Personalized advice, equipment to see in person, after-sales support Travel required
Online store specializing in ponds Wide selection, detailed product sheets, spare parts available Advice available by message or phone
Large DIY store Available immediately Limited range, often generic advice, parts impossible to find a few years later
General marketplace Headline price Unknown brands, incomplete instructions, uncertain warranty and returns
Second-hand purchase from private individuals Lower cost Unknown condition of the seals and UV unit, filter media needs replacing, model sometimes discontinued

The decisive factor, far more than a few euros' difference, is after-sales service. A pond filter lasts for many seasons: its foams wear out, the UV lamp needs regular replacement, and the seals age. Buying a brand whose spare parts remain available, from a seller who keeps them in stock, prevents you from having to replace the entire filter because a simple replacement foam cannot be found.

How to read a product sheet correctly

Filter names often contain a number, such as 5000 or 16000. It generally corresponds to a maximum pond volume under the most favorable conditions, often without fish. Reputable manufacturers also specify the capacity with goldfish and with koi, which is significantly lower. That is the line you need to read.

Then check what is included. “Filter only” means you will need to buy a pump, and sometimes a UV unit and pipes. A “kit” or “set” generally includes a pump, pipes, and UV unit, already sized to work together. For a first pond, the kit avoids flow-rate and diameter incompatibilities.

Finally, consider the installation type: gravity-fed (installed above the water level, easy to maintain, with gravity-fed return) or pressure (can be buried and sends water to a higher waterfall). This choice depends more on your garden than on the filter itself.

The most common purchasing mistakes

  1. Choosing based on the maximum volume without considering the fish: the filter becomes saturated by the first summer.
  2. Forgetting the pump when buying a filter alone, or choosing a pump whose flow exceeds what the filter can handle.
  3. Neglecting diameters: a pipe that is too narrow between the pump and filter causes a significant loss of flow.
  4. Underestimating the location: a gravity-fed filter installed too low will overflow or fail to drain.
  5. Believing that a larger filter compensates for everything: it replaces neither plants nor reasonable feeding.

After purchase: the first few days

A new filter is not effective immediately. Its biological section must be colonized by bacteria, which takes anywhere from a few weeks to longer depending on the water temperature. Preferably start it in spring, limit feeding during this period, and do not clean the foam with tap water. The water may remain cloudy at first: this is normal and is not a sign of a bad purchase.

Frequently asked questions

— Where can you buy a pond filter?

Preferably from a specialist pond seller, in-store or online, who can advise you and provide replacement parts throughout the filter's service life.

— What does the number in a pond filter's name mean?

It generally indicates the maximum volume under the best conditions, often without fish. Refer to the capacity indicated for goldfish or koi.

— Is it better to buy a complete kit or a filter alone?

For a first pond, the complete kit prevents flow rate and diameter errors. The filter alone is suitable if you already have a suitable pump.

— Can you buy a used pond filter?

It is possible, but plan to replace the filter media and UV lamp, and check that parts for the model are still available.

In summary

  • Prepare the actual volume, fish, sunlight exposure, and location before buying.
  • Choose a specialized seller who provides advice and replacement parts.
  • Check the capacity with fish and verify whether the pump, UV unit, and hoses are included.
  • A new filter takes several weeks to become fully effective.
