Garden pond waterproofing: which system should you choose? Skip to content

Which product should I choose to waterproof my garden pond? Liner, EPDM, prefabricated shell, concrete, or polyester

When building a pond, the question of waterproofing arises very quickly, along with a flood of conflicting opinions. “Choose EPDM, it lasts forever.” “A shell is simpler.” “Nothing beats concrete.” They are all right in certain situations. There is no single best waterproofing product: the right choice depends on the pond's shape and size, your budget, the time you want to devote to it, and whether or not you have demanding fish such as koi. This guide compares the main categories to help you decide.

— The short answer

For the vast majority of garden ponds, a liner laid over underlay remains the most versatile solution: PVC for a tight budget and a small pond, EPDM for flexibility, longevity, and complex shapes. A preformed shell is suitable for small ponds that need to be installed quickly. Coated concrete and fiberglass laminated on site are justified for architectural ponds, ponds with straight walls, or large koi ponds. In all cases, installation quality matters just as much as the product.

The five main categories

System Strengths Limitations
PVC liner Economical, easy to find, can be bonded and repaired Becomes stiffer over time and with UV exposure, less flexible in cold weather
EPDM liner Very flexible, conforms to shapes, renowned for its longevity More expensive and heavier, special adhesive required
Preformed shell Quick installation, predetermined shape Small volumes, fixed shape, narrow shelves
Concrete + waterproofing coating Straight walls, architectural shapes, very robust Heavy construction, possible cracking, pH to monitor initially
Fiberglass laminated on site Smooth surface without folds, ideal for koi ponds Demanding technique, often entrusted to a professional

Criterion 1: pond shape

A pond with freeform contours, shelves, and sloping banks calls for a flexible liner. EPDM excels here: it folds without breaking and forms creases that are easier to distribute. A rectangular pond with vertical walls, raised or adjoining a terrace, is better suited to coated concrete or fiberglass, which provide clean angles without folds. For a small pond of a few hundred liters, a preformed shell is often the simplest option.

Criterion 2: budget over time

At the time of purchase, PVC is the cheapest, followed by EPDM, then masonry or laminated solutions, which require more materials and labor. But also compare them over time: an inexpensive liner that stiffens and needs replacing means draining the pond, removing the plants and redoing the edges. The real cost of waterproofing is mainly the cost of redoing the work when it fails: saving money on the liner for a large pond is rarely a good calculation.

Criterion 3: fish

For an ornamental pond with a few goldfish, all solutions are suitable, provided the products are intended for pond use. For koi, enthusiasts often look for smooth walls without folds where waste can accumulate, which are easy to clean and compatible with bottom drains: coated concrete or polyester therefore have the advantage, although many well-installed EPDM koi ponds work perfectly well.

One precaution applies to all categories: a building product is not necessarily compatible with fish. Liners, adhesives, coatings and resins must be explicitly intended for ponds, and cement-based or freshly laminated surfaces require curing time and rinsing before introducing fish into the water.

Criterion 4: installation and repairability

A liner can be installed in one day with a few pairs of hands. Its success depends on preparing the ground (removing stones and roots), using protective underlay, and creating a carefully finished edge that prevents water from escaping through capillary action. It can be repaired with patch kits or strips suited to the material. Concrete and polyester require more expertise, but can be repaired locally. A shell is easy to repair if it is made of polyester, but much more difficult to repair if it is made of polyethylene.

Three typical scenarios

  • Small decorative pond, tight budget: PVC liner over underlay, or a preformed shell.
  • Free-form ornamental pond, from a few m³ to a few dozen m³: EPDM over underlay, the best compromise between flexibility and durability.
  • Koi pond with straight walls and bottom drains: concrete with a suitable waterproofing coating, or laminated polyester.

What matters as much as the product

Most leaks found in the field are not caused by a poor product, but by sloppy installation: a liner laid without an underliner on stony ground, a liner edge that is too low and lets water escape, poorly made pipe penetrations, a waterfall without continuous waterproofing. Whatever system you choose, take the time to prepare the base and finish the edges carefully: that is what determines your pond's lifespan.

Frequently asked questions

— Which liner is the most durable for a pond?

EPDM is known for its flexibility and longevity. PVC costs less but becomes rigid over time, especially if exposed to UV rays.

— Is a preformed shell or a liner better?

A preformed shell is quick to install for a small pond with a fixed shape. A liner offers more freedom in terms of shape and volume.

— Which waterproofing system should be used for a koi pond?

Coated concrete or laminated fiberglass for smooth walls and bottom drains; a well-installed EPDM liner is also suitable for many koi ponds.

— Is an underliner always needed beneath the liner?

Yes. Geotextile underliner protects the liner from stones, roots, and friction; it is an inexpensive form of insurance.

In summary

  • No product is best in every situation: it all depends on the shape, budget, and use.
  • PVC: affordable and repairable; EPDM: flexible and durable.
  • Preformed shell: quick for small ponds; concrete or fiberglass: straight walls and koi.
  • Compare the cost over time, not just the purchase price.
  • Products designed for ponds, underliner beneath the liner, carefully finished edges.
