Purify Koi Pond Water with Virkon S®
500 grams are enough for 500,000 liters of pond maintenance.
Virkon® S is a disinfectant that works from 0 degrees. It kills pathogens, reduces the number of germs, fights viruses, bacteria and fungi.
There are two very serious viral diseases: the "Koi Herpes Virus" (KHV) and the "Spring Viremia". As with all viral diseases, no specific treatment is yet possible. However, supportive measures combined with biosecurity measures, as applied in the breeding, ensure that the virus cannot spread. This is the maximum that can be achieved.
To prevent the loss of Koi and help reduce potential viral diseases, we have developed effective biosecurity programs. These programs help improve the health and welfare of Koi and are also used in commercial fish farms.
What is Virkon®?
Several viruses, including “herpes”, pose serious threats to Koi owners. Many fish carry them without showing any signs of infection. When these carriers come into contact with susceptible fish, they can shed the virus into the water under stressful conditions, leading to infections and very high fish mortality. Virkon has been independently shown to be highly effective against major fish diseases/pathogens. Recent research on fish farms has shown that if Virkon is added at a rate of 2 grams per 1000 litres of water, Virkon breaks down in the water and has low toxicity. This dosage does not completely disinfect the water, like concentrated disinfectants, but purifies it and thus reduces the availability of viruses that may be present. It is therefore better to speak of a form of water conditioning rather than fumigation or disinfection. A very important property for use in koi ponds is that Virkon significantly reduces the content of pathogenic bacteria and some protozoan parasites in the water (bacterial pressure).
Koi are kept in closed systems with biological filters through which the water is circulated. This makes continuous dosing with fresh water very difficult. Because various viruses, including "herpes", are a major problem, "DuPont Animal Health Solutions" has sought a solution in collaboration with Biosecurity. A system has been developed that will provide good water conditions under normal circumstances. This without reducing the effectiveness of the biological filters or the concentration of Virkon reaching toxic levels. Virkon is primarily a powerful virucidal disinfectant for disinfecting aquatic equipment. It is effectively used in Koi ponds to purify the water of various viruses, including "herpes".
Purify Koi Pond Water with Virkon® S
Most Koi ponds are equipped with a water pump, a microbiological filter and a UV light source. However, the UV and/or ozone equipment must be turned off before dosing. After dosing, as soon as Virkon has spread into the pond water, the UV and/or ozone can be reactivated. Make sure that the circulation pump(s) are actually running during Virkon dispensing.
Dosage/Use: Preferably mix Virkon® S in a bucket of water and distribute evenly over the pond/quarantine. UV and/or ozone equipment must be switched off before dosing. After dosing, as soon as Virkon has spread into the pond water, the UV and/or ozone can be reactivated.
At House Of Kata, we add an important parameter to “To measure is to know”.
For years we have been measuring common water values such as ammonium, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. At House Of Kata we add an important parameter: bacterial pressure. It has been found that pathogenic bacteria settle in walls, bottoms, corners and pipes. Don't be surprised, beware of this silent killer.
How Virkon® S works
Virkon is a unique patented formulation based on a complex oxidizing system in which a number of biocides are simultaneously effective on the physical (and chemical) components of a pathogen. The addition of a surfactant increases permeability, the presence of a buffer stabilizes the low pH. and optimizes disinfection. Acts on organic contamination and is insensitive to temperature.
Suspected circumstances of illness
If koi herpes virus (KHV) or spring viremia virus infection is suspected in a koi population, clearly affected fish should be
