A koi pond is not a water hole that you fill up and put the fish in!! You will very quickly become disillusioned!! and have disappointments!!
For a pond to function properly, it requires essential and regular care to give itself every chance of success without having to constantly use remedies because "the fish get sick and I don't know why"!!
  1. Having a correct fish/pond ratio that respects the needs of the species...you don't put koi in 4 m3...nor a sturgeon in 10 m3...
  2. Having good filtration composed of a mechanical part (removes dirt, suspended solids) and a biological part (transforms harmful elements such as nitrites and ammonia into less harmful components such as nitrates for example)….in proportion to the quantity and variety of fish in the pond & good oxygenation, very important!
  3. Make regular contributions of fresh tap water or controlled well water…no rainwater please!!From 5 to 20% per week depending on the volume of the pond, the filtration in place and the varieties and number of fish. Every week in the right season…less in winter…
  4. Readjust the parameters…especially the KH to stay around 4 to 8, which will avoid many problems of PH fluctuation (kh serves as a buffer) and will provide carbonates for the health of the filtration bacteria that consume it as well as the fish! To readjust: change the water if the water is hard and if the water is too soft: add KH +
  5. In spring and autumn...add " malamix 17 " (one dose) to provide plenty of essential elements for the fish and for the health of the pond to boost the water which becomes depleted if nothing is ever added.
  6. A dose of “ organic anarex ”…or another similar product…in summer…to boost the filter bacteria again and a plus against the little ailments that some koi can have….
  7. Every week: add 10g of clay/m3 after changing the water...clay is full of mineral particles that are important for fish and keeping the water clear...at the same time, a dose of " baobio " in the filtration at a rate of 2.5g/m3 is also beneficial!!
  8. Use " supertab " or " virkon " at the doses prescribed in the instructions and this...to lower the bacterial pressure in the pelvis and at the same time take care of some pathogens that are just waiting for one thing: to be forgotten so that they become...worrying!!
  9. Every month...a maintenance dose of " green control "... "pond repair", algae, etc...to prevent being invaded by filamentous algae...now, if you don't have any or very little...forget this advice!!
  10. 2 times a year (spring and late fall), boost your fish's immunity with a vitamin program containing vitamins C & D, propolis , echinacea, "alvityl defenses" for example... but there are others... garlic and clay mainly to mix with their usual pellets. See my recipe...
Here are my 10 "recommandments" to ensure a pond that gives itself the best possible chance of keeping healthy fish that will bring you a lot of pleasure without too much trouble! Some will say... it's excessive, I don't spend my money on useless products and that all this is just commercial, etc... !! To those, I would say: everyone does as they please but... good prevention is always better than waiting for more significant problems that risk costing you... much more! A word to the wise...
