The Blue Lagoon UV-C Copper Ionizer is mounted on the piping downstream of the swimming pool filter. Pool water flows into the body of the Blue Lagoon UV-C Copper Ionizer. The body has a UV-C lamp and a copper unit. The copper electrode continuously releases copper ions into the water flowing through the body. Positively charged copper ions (Cu2+) are attracted to the negatively charged cell wall of microorganisms. Once the bond has been established with the copper ions, the permeability of the cell wall is greatly disturbed: the organism no longer absorbs nutrients and dies. The process that releases positively charged copper ions is called electrolysis or copper ionization. Copper ions remain active until bonded with a cell wall. Due to this, the action of the copper is long-lasting, even when the filter installation is deactivated. The UV-C lamp built into the Blue Lagoon UV-C Copper Ionizer generates UV-C radiation. This radiation with a wavelength of 254 nm alters the DNA of microorganisms, which kills them. The design of the reactor guarantees optimum exposure of the water to UV-C radiation. The 316L stainless steel reactor ensures additional reflection of UV-C radiation, which allows an efficiency gain of up to 35%. The combination of UV-C and copper ionization achieves the correct water balance, hence much less chlorine is needed.
