Can I use an agricultural tarpaulin to build my pond?

We sometimes receive emails or direct requests to find out if it is possible to use an agricultural tarp to create a water feature in a garden. These agricultural tarpaulins are often very thin, and made mainly of PVC. We do not recommend using these covers to build a pond.

You could use this type of agricultural pond cover to create a temporary pond that will last a few days, and again, the risk of leakage is very high. Does that mean that we can use a stronger PVC tarpaulin?

For several years, we have been inviting you to use EPDM tarpaulins. We always want to offer you the strongest materials, and unfortunately, PVC has a reduced lifespan (ten years), because this type of material is sensitive to UV rays. To create a garden pond, we always invite you to use EPDM covers.
