Peut-on ajouter du sel dans l'eau de l'étang ?

Can salt be added to pond water?

It is not recommended to add salt to the pond water. We will explain the reasons to you. Salt has more disadvantages than advantages if you place it directly in your pond. It is mainly used for sick fish placed in a separate quarantine tank to restore normal osmoregulation.

Most fish live in water richer in salt than their body fluids. As salt attracts water, they constantly lose water through their skin and gills. Saltwater fish must therefore drink continuously and excrete as little urine as possible. They actively remove excess salt through their gills.

In freshwater fish, it is exactly the opposite: water constantly enters through the gills, because their blood is saltier than the fresh water that surrounds them. Freshwater fish excrete very dilute urine to remove excess water. They actively absorb salts through their gills to compensate for salt losses through their urine.
In the event of disease, a very stressful situation for fish, their body needs all the energy available to fight infections. If you add salt to the water, the differences in salt concentration between the inside and the outside of the fish's body are reduced, so the fish expends less energy to enable osmoregulation. The energy released can thus be used to fight the disease. Salt is therefore not a medicine, but it helps fish to conserve energy to fight disease.

Clinopti Plus

This is the reason why salt is sometimes added to the water in certain aquariums. To be effective and safe, the dosage should be around 0.2% salt, or 200 grams of salt per 100 liters of water. Some aquarium plants tolerate such a concentration of salt very well.

In garden ponds, the use of salt is not recommended because salt has adverse effects on the growth of most aquatic plants and on the filtration system. You should never add salt if you use a mineral filter ( Clinopti Plus ) in the pond water or the filter. The salt will indeed compete with the ammonium absorbed by the mineral. This substance is then released into the water, which has harmful effects on aquatic life.

If you want to carry out a salt treatment, it is therefore advisable to remove sick fish from the basin and place them in a separate tank with salt. In this case, the salt concentration may be higher, provided that the fish are subjected to a short-term treatment.
