What is the use of substrate in a pond?

Many pond enthusiasts like a lighter substrate to create special effects in their ponds. It is not essential to add substrate to a pond. A substrate is used for several reasons:

• bacterial support in the pelvis
• gives a clearer appearance to the bottom and it brings out the fish and other animals in the basin.

This substrate also allows (if it is porous) to accumulate organic matter to eventually feed plants. However, for use with plants, lava rock, also called pozzolan, is preferred.

• very porous and inert substrate thanks to its volcanic origin
• ideal as filter material on the bottom of the pond or in the filter
• can also be used in planting baskets for anchoring

Bottom substrate helps lighten the bottom of the pond (beige effect). It is also a good support for bacteria. Our substrate does not float or release substances harmful to organisms in the pond.
