Terrarium animals are cold-blooded animals that are highly dependent on light, especially its quality and intensity. Activity, food consumption, digestion or rest phases are influenced by the alternation of day and night and the intensity of the light. The light output and the quality of the light differ depending on the light source.

Terrarium animals are cold-blooded animals and therefore highly dependent on light, especially its quality and intensity. Activity, nutrition, digestion or rest are influenced by the day/night alternation and the intensity of the light. The output and quality of the light differ depending on the light source.
In addition, many terrarium animals associate light with heat and seek out bright spots in the terrarium for their "sunbathing". This must be taken into account, especially when heating desert terrariums. The output and quality of the light differs depending on the source used. Fluorescent tubes give off a lot of light and little heat, while incandescent lamps convert most of the absorbed energy into heat and a small part into light.
Depending on their origin, terrarium animals need more or less UV light for their well-being. UVB stimulates the synthesis of vitamin D3 from vitamin D2. UVA stimulates pigmentation. It must be taken into account that glass intercepts approx. 50% of the UV rays and that the lamps must therefore be installed inside the terrarium.
For animals that need UV light (i.e. active during the day) and heat, HQI spotlights such as the JBL ReptilDesert LUW will be the best choice. They offer a full spectrum identical to that of the sun, including UVA and UVB rays, and emit heat. Once the lamp is switched off, the temperature in the terrarium drops, which is equivalent to the desired night-time temperature drop.
For tall terrariums, it is important that the animals can get close to the spot to receive enough UV rays.
