Hot-dip galvanizing involves immersing the steel in a bath of molten zinc at 450°C. First, the steel is degreased and pickled (to remove all impurities from the surface). The zinc bonds to the steel through a chemical reaction at this melting temperature. When the steel is extracted from the bath, several layers of zinc-iron alloys have formed on its surface. These different layers of alloys, harder than steel, have an increasingly high zinc content as one approaches the surface.
