The peace symbol was designed in England in 1958 by Gerald Holtom to protest against a nuclear weapons plant. It is obtained by merging the letters D (disarmament, vertical line) and N (nuclear, upside-down V shape) written in semaphore alphabet and placed inside a circle. The semaphore alphabet is the method of body communication by waving flags, which is used in the navy and air force. Today, the peace symbol has become a universal reference.
