Renovating an Old Garden Pond: Assessment, Restoration, or Reconstruction
It may have been dug by the previous owners, or by you fifteen years ago. Today, the water is green for much of the summer, the level drops faster than before, the liner is visible along the edges and the pump is making a worrying noise. Should you tear everything out, or can this old pond be saved? In most cases, an old pond can be renovated without starting from scratch: it all depends on diagnosing four points, namely watertightness, silt buildup, filtration and shape. Here is how to make this diagnosis, decide what to do, and then carry out the work in the right order.
— The short answer
Start by assessing the current situation: leak test, sludge thickness, age of the liner, pump and filter performance, depth and shape. If the liner is sound, restoration is often enough: dredging, spot repairs, upgraded filtration and new planting. If the liner is weakened, the shape is unsuitable or the pond is too shallow, it is better to rebuild while the site is open. In both cases, the order remains the same: remove the fish and plants, drain the pond, dredge it, restore watertightness, modernize the equipment, replant, then refill it gradually. Early autumn is often the best time; very early spring is also suitable, before amphibians spawn.

Assess the current situation
Before reaching for the shovel, take the time to observe. A proper diagnosis prevents you from replacing a liner that only had a poorly positioned fold, or, conversely, spending money on new filtration for a pond that is leaking. Here is the decision tree we use at the counter.
| Symptom | Diagnosis to carry out | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| The water level drops faster than in a control bucket | Turn off the pump and waterfall, then observe where the water level stabilizes | Repair locally if the defect is isolated; replace if the liner is brittle |
| Black bottom, rotten-egg smell when stirred | Measure the thickness of the sludge with a stick | Partial or complete dredging |
| Persistent green water despite the filter | Compare actual flow rate, volume and number of fish, and the age of the UV lamp | Upgrade the filtration system |
| Fish at risk in summer or winter | Measure the maximum depth | Deepen it, so often rebuild it |
| Collapsing banks, liner visible everywhere | Inspect slopes and edges | Restoring the banks, sometimes rebuilding |
To locate a leak before draining, follow the method described in how to find a water leak in a pond. Also note the positive points: a pond that is well positioned, in partial shade and away from large trees, is worth keeping in its current location.
Removing fish and plants
This is the most delicate stage for the pond's inhabitants. Prepare for it a few days in advance.
- Choose the right period: preferably early autumn, or very early spring, when the water is cool and well oxygenated. Avoid heatwaves and severe cold.
- Check for amphibians: in spring, frogs, toads and newts lay their eggs there. Several species are protected (Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC); postpone the work rather than destroy the spawn.
- Prepare a holding tank in the shade, filled with pond water, equipped with an air pump and covered with a net: stressed fish jump.
- Lower the water level by pumping, then catch the fish with a landing net or fish trap when little water remains.
- Remove the plants in their baskets, keep them moist in the shade, in a folded liner or in containers with a little water.
- Keep a few buckets of old water and, if possible, the filter foams in the pond water: they provide reserves of beneficial bacteria for restarting the system.
Do not feed the fish while they are in the holding tank, or feed them very little: the water deteriorates quickly.

Draining and dredging
Should you drain it completely? Not always. If the liner is in good condition and the sludge is the only problem, vacuum dredging with the pond full or half-drained is often sufficient and preserves the ecosystem. Complete draining is necessary to repair or replace the liner, alter the shape or remove a very thick layer of sludge.
- Light sludge, a few centimetres deep: use a pond vacuum and then specific bacteria to digest the remaining deposits.
- Thick sludge: use a shovel and buckets once the pond has been drained, working barefoot or in flexible boots on a board so you do not puncture the liner.
- Keep a thin layer in an unlined natural pond: it helps with watertightness and supports life on the bottom.
Silt is rich in organic matter: spread in a thin layer over a flower bed or mixed with compost, it makes an excellent soil amendment. To learn more about dredging techniques, see how to dredge a pond, and for the schedule, see when to empty a pond.

Waterproofing: repair or replace
Once the pond has been emptied and cleaned, the liner can be examined. This is the moment of truth.
| Finding | Recommended decision |
|---|---|
| Flexible EPDM, one or two localized holes | Repair with primer and an adhesive patch |
| Old, stiff PVC that cracks when folded | Replacement: repairs will not hold |
| Liner in good condition but too short at the edges and exposed to UV | Local raising with a connected strip, followed by edge protection |
| Cracked preformed pond | Repair kit for fine cracks; replacement otherwise |
| Pond too shallow or shape needs revising | Reconstruction: new shape, new liner on felt |
If you need to replace the liner, this is a unique opportunity to make the pond deeper, soften the banks, and plan the pipe runs: don't reinstall it exactly as before. For a repair, our article on repairing a pond liner, linked below, explains the method in detail. Always add new geotextile felt beneath a new liner, and carefully remove any stones and roots that may have pierced the old one.
Modernizing filtration
Equipment from fifteen or twenty years ago often consumes much more for poorer results. Renovation is the right time to bring the technology up to date.
- Pump: newer energy-efficient motor models deliver the same flow rate for a fraction of the power consumption. On a device that runs day and night, the difference quickly shows up on the bill.
- Filter: size it according to the actual volume and fish population, not just the volume. A renovated pond often holds more fish than it did originally.
- UV: a lamp more than a year old has lost a significant part of its effectiveness; an old, improperly sized unit is almost useless.
- Skimmer: often missing from old ponds, it removes leaves and pollen before they sink and become sludge.
- Pipes: replace crushed or undersized pipes that restrict flow.
Take advantage of the empty pond to route the pipes neatly, buried or hidden under the edging, and to install a low-level intake point if the pond houses koi.

Reviewing the plantings
An old pond often suffers from two opposing problems: a few invasive plants that have colonized everything, and a lack of submerged plants. Renovation helps restore the balance.
- Divide overly large clumps of irises, rushes, or sedges, and replant only the vigorous divisions.
- Remove plants with aggressive rhizomes that threaten the liner, as well as any invasive exotic species.
- Add oxygenating plants: hornwort, whorled water-milfoil, and pondweeds. These compete most directly with algae.
- Cover part of the surface with water lilies to shade the water, without exceeding about half the surface.
- Replant in a poor substrate, gravel or special clay soil, never potting soil.

Refilling the pond
Refilling the pond is when impatience can ruin everything. A renovated pond is a new ecosystem that needs to rebuild its bacteria before receiving its full fish load.
- Fill with the available water, adding the buckets of old water you saved. If you use tap water, let it stand or use a suitable water conditioner.
- Restart the filtration immediately, using the old filter media if you kept it.
- Add starter bacteria to speed up filter colonization.
- Reinstall the plants as soon as you refill the pond.
- Reintroduce the fish once the water temperature is close to that of the holding tank, acclimatizing them gradually.
- Feed very sparingly for two to three weeks and test ammonia and nitrites regularly.
A slight green tint or somewhat cloudy water during the first few weeks is normal: the balance is re-established as the plants recover and the bacteria colonise the filter.

Costly mistakes
A poorly managed renovation can cause more damage than years of neglect. These mistakes occur regularly.
- Replacing the filtration without fixing the leak: the new equipment runs on a pond that is losing water, and you end up dismantling everything.
- Thoroughly cleaning a pond with a natural bottom: in an unlined pond, scraping down to the existing ground can pierce the watertight layer that had formed.
- Walking on the liner with shoes with deep-tread soles, or placing sharp tools on the bottom: one more hole to repair before even refilling the pond.
- Putting all the fish back and feeding them as before the next day: the filter has not yet regained its bacteria, so nitrite levels rise.
- Replanting in garden soil: it releases nutrients for months and feeds algae in the brand-new pond.
- Forgetting the edging: a liner left exposed around the edges deteriorates in the sun and will become the weak point again in a few years.
Budget and schedule
The scale of the work determines the budget and duration far more than the size of the pond. Here are three levels of renovation, given as relative orders of magnitude.
| Level | Work | Estimated duration | Relative budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refresh | Vacuum cleaning, dividing plants, bacteria | One weekend | Low |
| Restoration | Draining, cleaning, liner repair, new pump and new filter, planting | A few days | Medium, mainly involving filtration |
| Reconstruction | New shape, deepening, new liner and underlay, complete filtration, edging | One to two weeks | High, close to a new pond |
The sequence of work is always the same, regardless of the level: assessment, draining, emptying and cleaning, waterproofing, equipment and piping, edging, planting, refilling, returning the fish. Reversing two steps, such as installing the edging before testing the waterproofing, often means having to redo everything. If the assessment leads you to a complete reconstruction, our general guide on pond construction, how to build a garden pond or water feature, takes over.

Frequently asked questions
— When should an old garden pond be renovated?
Preferably in early autumn, or at the very beginning of spring before amphibians spawn, when the water is cool. Avoid summer, when fish cope poorly with being held.
— Does a pond need to be completely drained for cleaning?
Not necessarily. Vacuuming is often enough if the liner is sound. Complete draining is necessary to repair leaks, change the shape or remove very thick sludge.
— How can I tell whether my pond liner needs to be replaced?
A flexible EPDM liner with a few holes can be repaired. An old, stiff PVC liner that cracks when folded must be replaced, because repairs will not hold.
— How long should fish be kept out of the pond?
For as short a time as possible, ideally a few days, in a shaded, aerated and covered tank filled with pond water. Plan the work to limit this duration.
In summary
- Assess four points: watertightness, silt buildup, filtration, shape.
- Sound liner: restore it; fragile liner or pond that is too shallow: rebuild it.
- Remove fish and plants carefully, in spring or autumn.
- Upgrade the pump, filter, UV and skimmer while the pond is empty.
- Refill the pond gradually, with bacteria, little food and regular testing.
