What aquarium for a fighter?

Do you want to get a fighter and don't know what kind of aquarium to put it in? Where do you want to check that your fighter is in good condition? If so, this guide is here to help you get your fish in the right condition.

The Betta Splendens, much better known as "Fighter" is a very popular aquarium fish all over the world. It is not called like that without reason, it is a very territorial fish, especially the male, which does not accept other males in its environment and which shows a strong aggressive tendency towards other strongly colored fish or towards other territorial fish that would be no match for him. The female is much less belligerent, but she is no less aggressive in certain situations. It is therefore necessary to be well informed and take the necessary measures to avoid finding yourself in a situation where the fighters could endanger other fish in the aquarium, or vice versa. However, if you want your fighter to be able to live with other species, he will need space and therefore large aquariums (which we will see below).

So we are going to some tips for choosing the right aquarium for your fighter(s).

The bare minimum in terms of aquarium volume for a fighter is more or less 30 to 40 liters, for a couple or for a single individual, provided that the aquarium is well cleaned, that regular water changes are carried out and that it has all the devices necessary for its proper functioning.
Unfortunately, this volume does not allow any cohabitation with other species. However, you can create a beautiful aquarium decorated with a few plants to put your / your fighter there and be able to admire them living in their little bubble of comfort.

Here is the list of aquariums in this volume available on foudebassin.

If you want a slightly larger aquarium to be able to place more fighters there, you could go for aquariums with a volume between 45 and 60 liters. This could allow you to have a fighting male and several females, without them feeling too cramped and without their well-being being affected. However, this would still not allow you to cohabit them with other species without risk. But it would give you more decorative freedom in the aquarium.

Now if you absolutely want your fighters to be in the company of other species, you will have to move towards aquariums of 75 to 90 Liters, or even larger volumes, depending on the species and their quantity. From this volume, it indeed becomes possible to mix the fighters with other fish, while taking care not to make a mix without taking care of the species that can coexist with the Betta and those that cannot.

The guppies for example are to be avoided, they make prime targets for the Fighters because of their veils, indeed it does not please the Fighter to have a competitor in this area. If you want more information on the species you can mix with the fighter, do not hesitate to ask a specialist in the subject.

Below is the list of aquariums located between 75 and 90 Liters:

Now let's move on to much more permissive aquariums; aquariums between 100 and 150 Liters, these aquariums will allow you to mix many more species with your fighters or to support a larger group of fighters (While always keeping only one male to avoid fighting).

A species of fish that could live with the fighter in an aquarium of this size would be the neon in a small school of 10 fish minimum so that they are happy and avoiding adding other species in addition to this two so as not to not overload their living space which is vital for their good coexistence.

Then, for the rest, we move on to aquariums with a volume of more than 150 Liters, between 160 Liters and 600 Liters. Depending on the aquarium you choose you can put more or less fish, if you want a neon bench you could increase the quantity of fish present in it. If you want to create a group of fighters with more females, this also becomes possible. And if you decide to keep only a limited amount of fish and species in a larger aquarium, it will give them more freedom and space, which cannot be negative for them, on the contrary, their well-being will be positively increased, which will allow them to be happier and therefore you too!

In the end, there are a large number of aquariums that could be suitable for a single fighter, then as the number of fighters and other species you want to add, the aquarium will have to increase in size and therefore in liters . However, it should not be forgotten that the fighter remains a very territorial fish and that there is always a risk that it will attack the other species present in the aquarium, even if they are supposed to be able to coexist. However, the larger the aquarium, the lower this risk will be. If you are wondering which species can coexist with a minimum of risk with a fighter(s), do not hesitate to ask your retailer or a specialist in the field.
