When to lime a pond?

Liming a pond involves adding lime to the pond water to rebalance the pH and combat unwanted algae and bacteria. Here are some things to consider when to lime a pond, however, we do not recommend this older method. It is recommended to have a water analysis done, and to contact us or a pond specialist for advice.

  • If the pH of the pond water is below 7, this may be a sign of excessive acidity and it may be necessary to lime the pond to rebalance the pH. Be careful not to overdose, however. To balance the pH, we tend to use NAUTEX which will balance the water more gently and naturally.

  • If you notice the presence of algae or unwanted bacteria in the pond, liming can be a solution to control these pests.

  • If you have recently done work on the pond (e.g. changing the filtration or adding fish) or have noticed unusual changes in the condition of the water (color, odor, etc.), it may be a good idea to lime the pond to rebalance the water parameters.

It is important to note that liming the pond must be carried out with great care and respecting the recommended doses so as not to disturb the balance of the water. Before liming a pond, absolutely seek the advice of a specialist. There are gentler methods (bacteria and minerals) that are just as effective and much less aggressive for the biodiversity of your pond.
