A total emptying of prevention, for its part, must be carried out once every 4 years. This regularity prevents pollution of your pool in the long term. Today we are going to see how to empty a swimming pool with a bottom drain. We will also approach the natural swimming pool as well as the chlorine swimming pool.

What is the role of the bottom drain for a swimming pool?

The bottom drain is a filter located at the bottom of the pool. Generally made of ABS or PVC, this filtration grid is fixed to a hole connected to the water pump. The material of this part must be resistant to cleaning products such as chlorine and anti-limestone. Likewise, it must support the weight of bathers. To avoid any accident, equip it with an anti-suction device such as the Anti Vortex system, for example. Finally, the bottom drain allows water to be evacuated and purified.

But… how do you empty a swimming pool with a bottom drain?

Emptying a swimming pool with a bottom drain: instructions for use

Water quality must be maintained for sanitary reasons. Indeed, a stagnant aquatic environment can develop harmful microorganisms. Optimal purification reduces the risk of infection by bacteria. This is why it is necessary to renew 1/3 of the water once a year. Similarly, it is recommended to completely change it once every 3 years.

Renewing the water in your pool will also allow you to maintain the coating and the sealed parts of your pool. This action eliminates toxic substances that damage the walls and bottom of the pool. Limescale, algae and organic matter are evacuated with the dirty water, with each emptying. The tiles or the liner of your pool will be easier to clean (before the dirt becomes encrusted).

So, what steps should you take to empty a pool with a main drain?

Step 1: Comply with the regulations

Before emptying your pool, check if your hydraulic network is connected to mains drainage. If this is not the case, you must respect the regulations of your town hall. The emptying is then done towards the public waste water drainage network. Otherwise, draining the water in your garden can be a solution. But, it is necessary to make sure with the neighborhood that there is no risk of damage or flooding.

Step 2: Drain

The bottom drain allows easy emptying even if the bottom of your pool is flat. Simply proceed as follows, from the room that houses the pool pump:

  • Stop the pool pump;
  • Close the skimmer valve;
  • Place the filter valve on the main drain;
  • Open the bottom drain valve;
  • Place the "multi-way" valve in the drain position so that the water is evacuated without passing through the filter of the hydraulic network;
  • Switch the network back on to start the drain.

Step 3: Clean the pond

To clean a partially drained pool, use a dip net to remove large debris from the surface and bottom. With a vacuum broom, then scrub the sides and bottom of the pool. The water line sometimes leaves a yellowish mark all around the walls. It's a buildup of fungus that you can remove with a soft brush and baking soda. It is advisable to remove this yellowish band as soon as it appears.

When the pool is completely empty, you can brush its walls and bottom with a telescopic broom. To remove stubborn stains, apply baking soda and rub with a sponge. Rinse out all impurities with water and drain the basin again. It is better to avoid using toxic chemicals, for safety reasons.

Step 4: Fill the pool

To fill your pool, opt for good quality water. Mains water is perfectly suited for this purpose because it is already treated. On the other hand, its cost remains quite high and varies from one region to another. If you have a well, you can use its water. But, it must be tested and treated before any use. Which can be expensive. Finally, put chlorine in the skimmers of your filled pool and activate the filtration for 12 hours.

So ! You know how to take full advantage of your swimming pool with clear and limpid water. Just drain it at regular intervals. ⅓ of its water must be renewed at least once a year and entirely once every 3 years.
