J'ai une tortue aquatique dans un étang, est-ce qu'il faut la rentrer? Est-ce qu'elle supporte le gel?

I have a water turtle in a pond, should I bring it in? Can it withstand frost?

Aquatic turtles are generally able to withstand cold temperatures, but it is important to take precautions to ensure they remain safe and healthy during the winter months.

Pond turtles need to hibernate to survive the colder months of the year. When it gets cold, their metabolism slows down and they need less food and less water.

If you have an aquatic turtle and you live in an area where it gets very cold in winter, it is recommended to install a heater (type IceFree 330 Oase) in its habitat to keep the water at an appropriate temperature.

You should also make sure that your turtle has plenty of food and clean water, and that it has a place to warm up and get out of the cold. If you follow these recommendations, your aquatic turtle should be able to get through the winter safely and healthily.

Here is a guide on how to care for an aquatic turtle in the winter in a garden:

  1. Make sure the turtle's habitat is suitable for winter. The turtle should have access to water that does not freeze.

  2. Keep the water at an appropriate temperature by using a heating device, such as a heat mat or heat lamp if it is a species that requires specific temperatures. Most water turtles can tolerate temperatures slightly below freezing.

  3. Make sure your turtle has plenty of food and aerated water. Turtles need to eat foods high in protein and fat during the winter to maintain their energy and health.

  4. Monitor your turtle to make sure it is not suffering from the cold. If your turtle appears inactive or has difficulty swimming, it may be too cold. If this is the case, move it to a warmer area immediately.

  5. Clean the turtle habitat regularly to prevent the water from becoming polluted.

By following these tips, you should be able to care for your aquatic turtle safely and healthily during the winter.

Here's how you can help your pond turtle hibernate:

  1. Prepare a shelter for your turtle using a plastic bucket, sandbox, or other waterproof container that is large enough for your turtle to move around in. Fill the container with soil or sand and place straw or dead leaves in it so your turtle can bury itself in. You can also fill a basket with aquatic soil and lava rock, place it in the water, and maybe your turtle will hide there for the winter.

  2. Place the container in a cool, dark place, such as a garage or basement, and cover it with a piece of geotextile fabric to retain heat and protect your turtle from drafts. If you are leaving your turtle outdoors, place the container in the pond or among aquatic plant beds.

  3. Before putting your tortoise in its hibernation shelter, make sure it has enough fat reserves to get through the winter. If it is too thin, feed it vegetables and fruits until it has reached a healthy weight.

  4. Place your tortoise in its hibernation shelter and cover it with straw or dead leaves. Let it sleep until the temperatures rise and the days get longer. You can also decide to leave it outside for the winter.
