When to feed pond fish? Season, temperature, and time of day
“I feed them in the evening when I get home from work; it’s the only time I’m there.” This very common habit is not always best for the fish. The right time to feed should not be chosen according to our schedule, but according to what is happening in the water. Feed pond fish when the water is warm enough for them to digest, preferably between late morning and afternoon, when oxygen levels are at their highest. The calendar and the clock, in detail.
— The short answer
The water temperature is what determines it: below about 6 to 8 °C, stop feeding; between 8 and 12 °C, feed sparingly with highly digestible food; above that, feed normally in several small meals. During the day, prefer the period between around 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and avoid large meals in the evening during summer. Always give only as much as they eat in a few minutes, no more.

Why temperature matters more than the calendar
Goldfish, koi, shubunkins, ide: all the fish in our ponds are cold-blooded. Their metabolism, and therefore their appetite and ability to digest, follows the water temperature. A meal given in 7 °C water stays in the intestine for a long time, is poorly assimilated, and anything uneaten rots on the bottom. Meanwhile, the filter bacteria also slow down when the water is cold: the ammonia produced by digestion is eliminated less effectively.
That is why a fixed date (“start feeding again on April 1”) does not make much sense. A mild or late spring, a deep or shallow pond, shade or sun: water is never at the same temperature from one year to the next, or from one garden to another. A thermometer placed a few dozen centimeters below the surface remains the best guide.

The schedule based on water temperature
| Water (rule of thumb) | Usual period in Belgium | Feeding |
|---|---|---|
| Below 6 to 8 °C | December to February | Nothing, the fish live off their reserves |
| 8 to 12 °C | March-April, late October-November | Wheat germ, small amounts, every one to three days |
| 12 to 18 °C | May, September-October | One to two meals per day, seasonal food |
| 18 to 25 °C | June to August | Two to four small meals per day |
| Over 26 to 28 °C | Heatwave | Reduce significantly, monitor oxygen levels |
Two periods require particular attention. In spring, the water warms slowly and fish weakened by winter want to eat before their immune system and the filter are fully operational. Proceed gradually. In autumn, the opposite is true: accompany the drop in temperature by switching to more digestible food and then spacing out meals.

What time should you feed?
In a pond, oxygen follows a daily cycle. During the day, plants and algae produce oxygen through photosynthesis; at night, they consume it, as do fish and bacteria. The lowest level generally occurs at dawn, and the highest in the late afternoon. Digestion increases fish oxygen consumption.
In practice, the largest meals should be given between late morning and mid-afternoon, when the water has warmed up and is well oxygenated. In spring and autumn, this is also when the water is warmest during the day. In summer, the first meal of the morning can be given around 9 or 10 a.m., not at dawn.
And in the evening? A small meal at the beginning of the evening in mild weather is not a problem. However, a large portion at nightfall during a hot spell adds oxygen consumption at the worst possible time. If you are only home in the evenings during the week, an adjustable automatic feeder solves the problem.

When is it better not to feed at all?
- Just before a storm or in very hot, overcast weather, when oxygen levels can drop.
- When fish stay at the surface gulping air.
- During certain treatments, according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- During the first few days after introducing new fish.
- When tests show ammonia or nitrites.
A common situation: discovering a pump failure in the morning, fish agitated at the surface, and instinctively giving them food to “calm them down.” This is exactly the opposite of what you should do: restore circulation and aeration, and feed only once the situation has returned to normal.

Frequently asked questions
— At what temperature should I start feeding again in spring?
As a general guideline, when the water remains above 8 to 10 °C for several consecutive days, using highly digestible food and small quantities.
— Is it better to feed in the morning or evening?
Preferably between late morning and afternoon. In the evening during summer, limit yourself to a small meal, as oxygen levels decrease overnight.
— How many times a day should I feed in summer?
Two to four small meals are better than one large one. Each time, give only as much as the fish can eat in a few minutes.
— Should I feed when it rains?
Ordinary rain changes nothing. In stormy, oppressive weather, or if fish remain at the surface, it is better to suspend feeding.
In summary
- Water temperature determines this, not the calendar date.
- Stop at around 6 to 8 °C, use wheat germ between 8 and 12 °C, and feed normally above that.
- Main meals between late morning and afternoon; never give a large portion in the evening during summer.
- Do not feed during thunderstorms, when fish are at the surface, or when water quality is poor.
