How much electricity does a pond aerator use? Calculate the electricity cost

Before buying an aerator, you want to know what it will cost to operate. The electrical calculation is simple, provided you start with the absorbed power and your rate. The annual bill depends mainly on the duration of use.

Convert watts to kilowatts

An absorbed power of 100 W corresponds to 0.10 kW; 400 W corresponds to 0.40 kW. Use the power consumption of the selected model. The motor's rated power and the power actually absorbed must not be confused when the specifications distinguish between them.

For a major project, a consumption reading can confirm actual operation. Add lighting or other equipment separately if you use them.

A few examples over thirty days

Power used for the calculation Duration Energy Cost at €0.25/kWh
100 W 24 h/day × 30 days 72 kWh 18 €
400 W 12 h/day × 30 days 144 kWh 36 €
400 W 24 h/day × 30 days 288 kWh 72 €
750 W 24 h/day × 30 days 540 kWh 135 €

These amounts are calculation examples, not current energy rates or a product's certified consumption. For 400 W running continuously for 365 days, the same calculation gives 3,504 kWh and €876 at this hypothetical rate.

Do not reduce operating hours without examining the need

Stopping the equipment at night can reduce the bill, but shift the shutdown to a period when oxygen levels may be lower. The schedule should be based on measurements, the fish and the setup. An economical program that no longer meets the need is not properly sized.

Conversely, an unnecessarily large installation can result in expenses without a proportional benefit. Compare technologies based on their actual use and the available data, not just their wattage.

The total cost exceeds consumption

  • Equipment price and necessary accessories.
  • Power supply, protection and connection.
  • Mooring, hoses, diffusers or manifolds.
  • Cleaning, membranes and other wear parts.
  • Access and handling time.

A pump that is inexpensive to purchase may become less advantageous if its network requires reworking or if maintenance is difficult. Request a complete proposal with the references and maintenance schedule.

Prepare your personal estimate

Note the power of the variant being considered, the number of days of use and the operating hours. Apply your actual price per kWh, then add the other costs. Compare two scenarios with equivalent requirements. The products presented below help identify the references; their product pages and technical validation provide the data needed for the calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 400 W aerator cost €72 per month?

In the example of thirty days of continuous operation at €0.25/kWh, yes. Your cost changes with the rate and the actual operating hours.

Can litres per hour be used to calculate the bill?

No. You need the electrical power consumed and the operating time.
