Jet d'eau en cloche au centre d'un bassin de jardin – Foudebassin

Creating a water fountain in a basin: choosing the pump and nozzle and installing them correctly

A water jet completely changes how a pond is perceived: movement, light, and the sound of water masking road noise. It also agitates the surface and promotes oxygen exchange. But a poorly sized jet sprays the patio as soon as it is windy, empties the pond through splashing, and sucks up silt. To create a successful water jet, choose the nozzle according to the desired effect, the pump according to the height and flow rate required by that nozzle, and limit the jet's height to the pond's width. Here's how.

— The short answer

The simplest option is a fountain kit combining a submersible pump, an extension tube, and several nozzles. Place the pump on a base at the bottom of the pond, in the center, so it does not suck up silt, and adjust the jet so its height does not exceed approximately half the pond's width. Connect it to a protected outdoor outlet with a 30 mA residual-current device. If there is no electricity in the garden, a solar kit produces a small jet in sunny weather.

Choose the effect first: types of nozzles

Nozzle Effect Requirement
Bell Smooth, silent dome of water Low height, highly sensitive to wind
Tulip or chalice Wide, corolla-shaped spray Medium flow rate
Spear or multi-jet Fine star-shaped or tiered jets Fine nozzles, requiring regular cleaning
Geyser or foam Tall, foamy white column, highly visible High flow rate, powerful pump

Jets with fine nozzles are the most elegant but clog quickly in water containing debris. In a fish pond or natural pond, nozzles with wider openings, such as the bell or geyser, are more tolerant.

Sizing the pump

A pump has two characteristics: a maximum flow rate, in liters per hour, and a maximum delivery head, in meters. The higher you ask it to pump, the lower its flow rate. Each manufacturer publishes a curve linking the two. For a fountain jet, what matters is the flow rate available at the desired height, and the nozzle you choose has its own flow and pressure requirements.

That is why pump and nozzle kits are so practical: the manufacturer has already matched the nozzles to the pump, and you know what height to expect from each effect. If you assemble it yourself, choose a pump whose flow rate at the jet height matches what the nozzle requires, with some allowance for losses in the tube and the gradual clogging of the foam.

The wind rule

A water jet rarely falls where you expect it to. In moderate wind, the droplets blow sideways and end up on the paving. The result: a water level that drops by several centimeters a day, a pump that eventually runs dry, and a slippery terrace. The practical rule: the jet height should not exceed half the width of the pond. In an exposed location, choose a low, compact nozzle such as a bell or geyser, or reduce the flow with the adjustment valve.

Installing the jet step by step

  1. Choose the location: in the center of the pond or a deep area, away from floating-leaved plants. Water lilies hate having water constantly fall on them.
  2. Place the pump on a stand, brick, or slab, 10 or 20 cm above the bottom. It will not draw in silt and will remain accessible.
  3. Adjust the extension tube so that the nozzle extends slightly above the surface and is perfectly vertical.
  4. Run the cable along the bottom and then under the edging stones, without stretching or cutting it: never make an electrical connection in the water.
  5. Plug it into an outdoor socket protected by a 30 mA residual-current circuit breaker, with the connection box out of the water.
  6. Adjust the height with the pump valve, first in calm weather and then in windy weather.

Water jets and fish: the right settings

The jet agitates the surface and promotes oxygen exchange, which is a real advantage in summer during stormy weather. That does not make it an aerator, however: a koi pond always needs filtration and often an air pump as well. In winter, turn off the jet when the water drops below 8 to 10 °C: it cools the entire body of water by mixing the cold surface water with the warmer bottom water where the fish rest. Remove the pump if it could freeze in a shallow pond.

No electricity in the garden? Go solar

A solar kit connects a photovoltaic panel to a small low-voltage pump. No cable to bury, no electrical risk, no consumption. In return, the fountain remains modest and depends on sunlight, except for models equipped with a battery. This is an excellent solution for a small pond, pool, or tub.

Fountain maintenance

  • Rinse the pre-filter foam as soon as the fountain weakens.
  • Unclog fine nozzles with a needle or small brush.
  • Descale the pump and nozzle with white vinegar if your water is hard.
  • Check the condition of the cable every spring.

Frequently asked questions

— Which pump for a 1-metre fountain?

A pump whose performance curve indicates sufficient flow at a height of slightly more than one metre, depending on the nozzle. Fountain kits directly indicate the height achieved with each nozzle.

— Can you leave a fountain running all night?

Yes, during the season it even adds oxygen. In winter, turn it off so as not to cool the water where the fish rest.

— Can a fountain replace a filter?

No. It agitates the surface but does not retain debris or dissolved waste. A pond with fish needs filtration.

— Why does my pond level drop when the fountain is running?

The wind carries the droplets out of the pond. Reduce the height or choose a more compact nozzle.

In summary

  • Choose the nozzle according to the desired effect, then choose the pump according to the flow rate that nozzle requires at the desired height.
  • Fountain height: no more than half the width of the pond.
  • Pump on a base, cable without a connection in the water, 30 mA residual-current device.
  • Turn off the fountain in winter; consider solar power for small ponds without electricity.
