JBL Clearmec plus - Filter media

Nitrites (NO2) : they constitute the second stage of nitrogen degradation. They are produced by bacteria from ammonium (NH4) and ammonia (NH3), then degraded into nitrates (NO3). Since nitrites reduce oxygen transport in the blood of fish, they generally have a lethal effect from 0.4 mg/l. The JBL Clearmec plus filter medium binds nitrites to the material. It does not need to be biologically degraded.

Nitrates : they are produced by bacteria from nitrites and, in the absence of oxygen (in the filter), degraded by bacteria into dinitrogen. This gas then escapes from the aquarium water (denitrification). Nitrates are not toxic to fish, but stimulate algae growth. The JBL Clearmec plus filter medium binds nitrites to the material. It does not need to be biologically degraded.

Phosphates : Phosphates are produced from dead algae and plant waste, as well as fish excrement and uneaten food. They are not a problem for fish, but stimulate algae growth. By doing partial water changes, removing plant residues and giving the right amount of food per fish, the phosphate load is kept low. JBL Clearmec plus binds phosphates to the filter medium.
