How to Create and Maintain a Trash Can

What is the Poubellarium?

The word itself is not very hot. It's a bit like the marriage of a trash can and an aquarium. Yes, but where does this idea come from? Is the poubellarium common?

We must not stop at words. Poubellarium has been practiced for millennia in Asia and other continents. They are jars with water and no technique. We put small fish and plants in it. In Europe, with temperature changes it is recommended to have at least 100 to 150 liters of water so that the temperature is more stable.

Can we use any container for the design of this trash can? - Nope. There are many plastics that are toxic to fish, so we can use large clay jars, or halved, waterproof barrels .

You can find them in garden centers, not just any, but rather those that have a section reserved for aquatic basins.

In addition, because there are no techniques, the cycles will be slower to develop and you will have to wait at least 1 month to 1 month and a half before putting fish in it.

What are the ideal plants for the trash can?

You need oxygenating plants that have great filtering power, such as papyrus. Papyrus have a powerful rooting power and have been recognized since time immemorial for filtering and purifying pond water. But you can also use water irises, they are found everywhere in ponds and on the banks of rivers. Hyacinths, water mints there are quite a few plants that are easy to find. They can be placed in small baskets, in water. To be covered with a few pebbles or even better, pozzolan, these are small porous volcanic stones allowing the development of useful bacteria for your dustbin.

There are also other very effective plants such as azolla caroliniana
callitriche palustris, ceratophyllum demersum, crassula helmsii, egeria densa,
elodea canadensis, hippuris vulgaris, hottonia palustris, hydrocharis morsus-ranae , hydrocotyle vulgaris, myriophyllum spicatum, myriophyllum verticillatum, potamogeton crispus, potamogeton natans, ranunculus aquatilis, sratiotes aloides, stratiotes aloides, utricularia vulgaris vallisneria gigantea.

As for adding water, you have to wait about three days before putting the fish in it to allow the chlorine to escape. Then, do not put large fish - avoid goldfish but favor guppies. 4 small guppies only to give them time to multiply and adapt more easily to their new environment. Poubellariums in France are best in an indoor terrace because in winter the plants die, the water freezes on the surface and the guppies will not tolerate these conditions very well. Do not put the trash can in the shade. It needs light for plants. Enough light each day to create temperature stability between night and day.

It is a good idea to add branches that protrude from the tank to allow animals that fall into the water to be able to get out without having to drown. Another idea is also to create a hole at the top of the tank for the evacuation of water, by placing a small fine filter like the mosquito nets at the mouth of the hole, in order to keep the same level of water even in showers and to keep small fish in the tank otherwise, if the water overflows, the fish will be accidentally evacuated, for their loss.

Also note that it is good to add bacteria from time to time , so that they can transform the ammonia from fish and plant waste into an element that plants can assimilate, which will keep your fish in good health.
