How to dig a pond on your land?

How to dig a pond on your land? You want a pond but you have no idea? You want to build a pond but how to dig it?

  • Place a garden hose on the ground to assess the size of your pond.
  • Use a marking spray.

Pass in a pool specialist store with your diagram or your ideas. Our experts will be happy to advise you remotely for the creation of your pool. The first thing to do is to determine the future size of the pond and its location. We recommend using a marking spray , or a garden hose .

What are the different types of pool?

There are several types of basins which are defined by three main classes

  • The pond : generally small in size and not very deep, it is characterized by very gently sloping shores. Often, the number of fish (if there are any) is very limited because here there is no mechanical filtration, the pond must remain as natural as possible. In this type of basin, you have to be careful with the plantations because they quickly become invasive. It is well suited to a place with little sunlight, otherwise green water is inevitable.
  • The mixed water/plant basin: it is the most common. It combines all the aspects of the pool and gives full freedom to the creator in terms of its layout: waterfall, fountain, stream, lagoon area can be associated. One of the advantages lies in the easy maintenance of the biotope. With good biological filtration, just add bacteria to maintain a good balance. Often planting areas are planned and the pool has landings at different heights. It is suitable for all types of situations (sunny or not). If there are young children, it is recommended to make a first stop at -20cm wide enough, so that if the child falls into the water, there is no risk, you can fish it out calmly.
  • The pool: this is recommended for maintaining KOÏ, the edges are generally steep, there are no plants in contact with the water in the pool and it is quite deep, around 1.5 to 2m. This type of pond must have significant filtration given the absence of plants. The use of bottom drains is recommended with gravity filtration. This type of pool is technically more elaborate, therefore more expensive and the installation can be tricky if you have young children. In this case, the pool must be barricaded in order not to risk an accident, in fact children are naturally attracted to water and fish.

The right proportion of the pelvis

The size of your pond will depend on the type of pond you want to create, your budget and the space available. If you have a small garden and you make a pond of more than 80% of the surface, it is more than likely that it will be of more than questionable aesthetics. On the other hand, if you have a large piece of land and you build a 2m² pool, it may look like a bucket of water in the middle of a large area, at the risk of making people believe that you have cried for one! A fair proportion is essential, you can make an assessment of the size of the future pool using a garden hose on the ground, this will give you a good idea of the size in relation to the environment.

As far as I'm concerned, and since we don't build a pond every day, I think we can call on a landscape architect. This one can make you a project where your basin will be completely integrated and in relation to your personal tastes, indeed, it is not only the basin but also all that goes around: driveway, terrace, plantations, rest area , finish of the surroundings, western or eastern aspect... Even if you want to do the work yourself, I am sure that a landscape architect will be of great help to you. Here no possible error because he will make you a drawing of the whole, you will be able to judge on plan.

Be careful not to see too small because very often we start with a small pond which ends in a large basin. It is necessary to think carefully and evaluate everything before embarking on the adventure because all subsequent modifications are generally not easy to carry out and can be very expensive.

The location

Some will tell you here, others there, but here, I would tell you: in the first place where there is room (I haven't heard many people say that yet!). Each situation has its advantages and disadvantages. In general, if you have a choice, place your pond as close to the house as possible, so that you can see it from inside in bad weather.

Indeed, there is nothing more pleasant than to see your fish evolve but also to contemplate the birds which come and go constantly. You will also be surprised by the evolution of the basin according to the seasons. If this is not possible, place it on a main access but always as close as possible to the house. If this is really not possible, then create a perspective in the garden which gives a glimpse of the pond without completely uncovering it, this is also an interesting effect because it arouses the curiosity of the visitor who, if he ventures, will discover a totally unexpected natural setting.

Sunny location: advantages: good plant growth and good flowering of water lilies and other plants.

The sun will give better visibility in the deeper parts. Disadvantages: if the pool is small, the risk of green water is almost inevitable (a UV will provide valuable services) because the water heats up more quickly. Watch out for the small shallow pools, the lack of oxygen awaits them. A small compressor will be very useful.
