How to stock a pond?

The construction and maintenance of a pond, basin, lake or even a quarry are arduous tasks which above all require great passion and significant financial resources. On this, you owe it to yourself to exploit the full potential of your basin, pond, lake or quarry. Stocking is just one of the many options that can help you make the most of all that your pond, lake, quarry or pool has to offer. Stocking or restocking a pond, basin, quarry or lake is within everyone's reach. However, to effectively stock or repopulate your pond, basin, lake... you must still follow certain specific rules. Here are some expert tips that will help you successfully stock or restock your pond, basin, lake or quarry.

1- Choose the type of fish with which to stock or repopulate your basin, pond, quarry or lake

For stocking or restocking your pond, basin, lake or quarry, the first step you must take will be to decide on the type or types of fish that will be used for this stocking or restocking. To choose the type of fish with which to stock or restock your pond, basin, or lake, you can take into account certain parameters, here are some of them: • As soon as you have a certain preference for a type of fish with which to stock or restocking your pond, pond or quarry, you should seek expert advice on your chosen type of fish. So you will know if your project is viable or not. • Also, if you choose to stock or restock your pond, basin or lake with several types of fish, you must think about the expenses that this choice may entail. The care as well as the purchase of food for these different types of fish represent a few examples of expenses that this choice can cause. • Finally, for the stocking or restocking of your pond, basin or quarry, you must choose your type of fish taking into account the climate. The water temperatures essential to the life of fish vary according to each type of fish. Stocking or restocking your pond, pond or lake with fish that tolerate the climate in your area can potentially save you a lot. Thus, you will spend less on heating or cooling water. To stock or repopulate your pond, you can choose from the many ornamental fish such as: melanote fish, goldfish, koi carp, shubunkins, sturgeons... For stocking or repopulating your pond , lake, or quarry, you can opt for fish such as: pike, roach, tench...

2- Obtain the required permits before stocking or restocking your basin, pond, lake or quarry

Fish farming is most often framed by numerous laws and regulations vary according to each country. So, before stocking or restocking your pool, pond or quarry, make sure you acquire all the necessary permits for the breeding of the type of fish you want to breed.

3- Be sure to stock or repopulate your pond, quarry basin or lake according to its size

First of all, it should be noted that before populating a basin or a pond that is newly built or has completely renewed water, some experts recommend a delay of at least four weeks. However, to stock or restock your pond, pond, quarry, or lake, it is necessary for you to determine the amount of fry that is ideal for the size and depth of your pond, pond, or quarry. You must then make a calculation to know how many fry to introduce. Under no circumstances should you overcrowd the pond or basin, because under crowded conditions the water quality as well as the health of the fish will deteriorate very quickly. Your pond, pond or lake can only provide food for a certain number of fish per square meter. As a result, if you introduce too many fry into your pond, pond or lake, some of your fish may starve. The rest of the fish may not grow as they should. So make sure to gradually populate your pond, basin, quarry... starting with a reasonable amount of fish of the same species. With this in mind, ornamental fish such as goldfish are the most recommended for medium-sized ponds or ponds.

4- As part of the stocking or restocking of your basin, pond, lake or quarry, preserve a harmony between the fish

In case you want to populate or repopulate your pond or basin with different species of fish, you must make sure that these fish of different breeds can live together in peace. We are not teaching you anything by informing you that all fish do not tolerate each other and therefore cannot logically live in peace in the same environment. To stock or repopulate your pond, lake or pond with different species of fish, you need to properly study those species. By doing so, you will easily detect fish that can be potential predators for other fish. Thus, after stocking or restocking your basin or pond, your fish will not eat each other under any circumstances. As an example, you can stock or repopulate your basin or pond with different species of fish thanks to a cohabitation between koi carp and goldfish. The volume of water in your basin or pond must still be adapted to this cohabitation, because the size of the koi carp can very quickly become impressive. Clearly, koi carp can grow up to over a meter, so it makes sense that they need a lot of space. In short, the stocking or restocking of a basin or pond must be done properly. Our above recommendations will then help you to effectively stock and restock your pond or pond.
